With Cingular, I put the person on hold. As soon as I do, I have an option that says, "add call" Clicking that, takes me to my dial pad. When I make connection with the 2nd person, I have a button that says 3-way call (I believe)

To hang up on one person, I have both persons listed on the display with the option to "hang up" by each name . . . .

    Default Phone Technician

If you're up for a third party application, there's a utility within Phone Technician which really simplifies three-way calls.
