On my old laptop, I thought I had the same problem. I bought a new 2 gig card. It worked fine in the palm, but wouldn't read in my laptop, my desktop, or my printer's card ports. Turns out, that none of them would read past a 512 meg card. Anything larger, it either wouldn't recognize them, or I would get an error telling me the card was corrupt. I bought an external card reader and no problems! You didn't say what size card you had in the Treo, but your post did make me remember about my snafus that I had when I bought the larger card . . .
How I actually solved the problem was I took the card to Circuit City where I purchased it and told a guy that I didn't think it was bad because it worked in my 650, and asked if I could plug it in a new computer. The new computer read it right away . . . I walked out with a $12 card reader . .
