Adding a number to an existing contact simply

Has anyone found a simple/automatic way to add a new number to an existing contact?

Example: someone whose work number you have entered into your contacts calls from their cell phone, which is not in the exitsing record. At the end of the call, the phone will ask you if you would like to add the contact. I'd like to be able to put the number directly into the existing contact, instead of cutting and pasting, etc, etc.

Any ideas?

I think you're out of luck. Maybe there's a third-party rewrite of the Contacts app?
