i have been a treo user for about 2 years now. i have had used ones, refurbs and brand new out of the box. they all seem to freeze up and restart when i am inthe middle of writing a txt, surfing the web, or going through the different normal programs. is this a common problem? or do i just have really bad luck :frown:

    Hi:

That is a pretty large question. Resets are certainly not uncommon, but the cause of them is almost always software related.

Do you like to try out programs and then dump some and keep some? It is possible you are not getting rid of all components if you aren't using an uninstaller program. Memory management can be another critical part.

You may have a situation that, bacause you are a long-term Palm user, perhaps you are transferring a problem from unit to unit through the Hot Sync. A corrupted contact or IM or text message may be a problem that is moved from unit to unit.

Another concern with a long-term Palm user is legacy software. Some users have loaded versions of programs made for older Palms and that can wreak havoc with a Treo. Programs for Treos must be written for the Treo OS.

After a crash have you dialed the "377" code to see what shows up as the active process that caused the crash? Keep in mind this is not foolproof as programs that interact with each other can give a false reading, but it is a place to begin the search. By the way, I am on Sprint and to do this I press ##377#. When I press the last #, a window opens to describe the process running when the crash occurred. Other carriers use variations of that code.

Can you give us a bit more history on what, if anything, you have done trying to identify what has been causing the problems? It would also be helpful to provide your carrier, GSM or CDMA, Firmware version, free memory available, if you use an SD card, thetype, brand, size, etc. Also, if GSM, what SIM card is being used?

I really have not been trying bunches of software, but I still add a few here and there. I have had my current 650 for two and a half years and I consider it to be pretty stable. I still have occasional resets, say one or maybe two per month, if that.

    Hope we can help....

    thanks for the reply.

i dont use this phone for work at all, just txting talking on the phone and surfing message boards. that's it. the only other program i have that did not come on the phone is google maps but i've had this problem before i downloaded it(googlemaps). i have sprint btw.

i just tried the "##377#" thing and it came up with this message:

A reset was caused on 12/9/07 at 3:16 pm while running "Messaging":

    MemoryMgr.c,
    Line:3842, Nil Ptr

Sounds like (to me) you have a corrupt message. Can you or are you willing to delete your messages to see if that cures your problem? That would avoid a hard reset.

Agreed plunker...That would be my first guess.

Was the last reset you had three days ago? At least we can have some assurance the reset code is indeed feeding some accurate information.

Also, if you do delete the messages beware of syncing them back. You might want to set that conduit to do nothing or hold off syncing for some time.
