answers but wont ring

Have a Treo 650 cingular unlocked. Software Treo650-1b.17-CNG.
After working reasonably well for a week I started not to receive calls.
Found that when the screen is lighted up, I receive calls with ring and/or buzz correctly.

BUT as soon as the screen goes to black (phone still on, green light blinking) I can receive a call but only get the display to accept the call. THere is only a very brief tone (first part of ring) and then no more sound or buzz. If I activate the screen again after losing the first call, the incoming calls ring again but go away when the screen timout-timer ends.

I did a hard-backup with SD card removed. No luck fixing this.
Any ideas/help would be appreciated.

OK I did a ZERO reset and that did NOT fix the problem. So I am the end of my string. I habve no idea what there is left to do.
