I love my new treo and have been using it to surf the web. Should I have some kind of antivirus software on my phone?

A quick answer - they exist; however, they are so very rare that the changes of you getting one from a reputible source is next to nothing.

If you deal in WareZ then yes you might consider it. The wireless networks themselves are very secure.
