You know, I have had my Treo 650 since November 2006 and I haven't done any backups. I am going to look into these backup programs right now, and choose one. There isn't a basic one on the Treo 650 straight out of the box, is there? Feel free to point me in the right direction.

Here's a link to several backup apps in the ET store. My personal favorite is BackupBuddy, but Resco Backup is also a popular choice. There's also a freeware backup app, but I'm drawing a blank on the name right now, and I haven't used it, so I can't make a suggestion about it.

Isn't there a backup app that comes as part of Unistall Manager?

Kreth, Can you please help me understand the difference between BackupBuddy for Windows and BackupBuddyVFS Professional?

From what I can see, BackupBuddy for Windows saves the backup to the PC during Hotsync. BackupBuddy VFS Professional saves the backup to the SD Card. If I am right about this, can the backup on the SD card then just be copied to my PC? If so, there seems to be no need for BackupBuddy for Windows. If not, what good is a backup on the SD card if my Treo gets lost or stolen along with the SD card which contains the backup? Please set me straight. :gasp:

You have the difference between the two figured out. The SD card backup is handy if you should ever lose data when you're away from your desk. You can run the restore from the card and be up and running again in 5-10 minutes. If you buy BackupBuddy Pro, it includes the BackupBuddyVFS app, and then you have redundant backups to both your SD card and your desktop.
Blue Nomad also offers BackupBuddy.net, which I beta-tested, The .net app performs OTA backups of your data (encrypted) to their servers. This is a subscription-based service. The basic package backs up just your PDA dbs (Contacts, Memos, Calendar, etc), while with the Pro version you can backup your entire Treo (not sure I'd do this unless I had an EVDO device).

I use BackupBuddy Pro for Windows due to my need to back up the SD card. It does an excellent job there with an option to specify those folders not to be copied. Due to the size of some of those files, the real fact that I am not one to go change settings very often, and that I use Bluetooth for the transfer, backing up the card is about a ten minute operation. The first time with the laptop I am now using took a longer period of time.

I back up to the card with Resco Backup nightly and keep nine active copies on the card. The reason for so many copies is that I like to play and stuff does happen.

You're welcome. It wouldn't hurt to trial some of the other backup apps as well to see which you like best. I've just been using BackupBuddy since my Palm IIIx days and have never had a problem with it.

    Hi kreth:

Out of curiosity, how many times have you had to do a restore using the software and has that ever been a problem?

NorthGlide does offer a backup product called OnGuard Backup, separately or bundled with a couple of their NeatFreak Packs.

Let's get this thread back to the DSTUpdater app. There are already plenty of threads about backup apps, but we can spin this one off as well if a good discussion continues.

    Cheers.
