    Default bluetooth hotsynch

have synched successfully about 20 times now. however i intermittently get this problem.

"unable to initiate Hotsynch operation because the port is in use by another application"

now it appears that this is a port on the Treo (have re-booted computer to no avail but soft reset on Treo worked) but i have the following questions.

    which port?
    which application?
how do i disconnect the application?
how do i prevent said application from hogging the port?

now i DON'T have internet active (network is disconnected and icon agrees), it's not in a cradle, nor does it have a cable attached even power cable. not so sure about IR but don't know how to turn that OFF (surely it's different?)

    ideas please?

    thanks.

I was testing the stregnth of the signal by attempting to hotsync from another room - far from my Powerbook. I expected to get a message telling me it could not find the corresponding Bluetooth connection. I did receive the same message as you. In affect, it wasn't that the port was in use – rather the phone wasn't in sight of the laptop's Bluetooth connection.

Make sure you're close to your connection. Try sending files to confirm Bluetooth connectivity.

tried that unsucessfully sadly. wouldn't explain why re-booting the device worked in the same place tho'. what "port" does the treo use and what else uses that apart from the bluetooth is the key question i think.

    any answers to that?

Default Same problem with Bluetooth Hot Sync

I'm having the same problem. Originally my Bluetooth Hot Sync worked fine. Then I went downstairs and hooked up another Bluetooth USB radio and tried to Hot Sync to that computer. Got the "port in use" message. Came back upstairs and got the same message. Since then, I've been able to transfer files (one at a time) but cannot Hot Sync. Like you, I wonder what port it's talking about and what application could be using it!

    Thanks to anyone who responds.

Default which "port" is the hotsynch using

how does one identify programs using the "port" that appears to be blocking the use of my bluetooth? even soft reset doesn't seem to be working now...

interestingly this is a VERY common problem across usergroups and NO-ONE has yet come up with the answer.

and the problem (despite ideas contrary) is on the TREO. some app/setting on the treo is convincing the bluetooth app that the "port" is in use and until this is discouraged by hard set it appears, there isn't a way around it.

unless of course YOU know better.

so come on guys? put your heads together, solve this and become a superhero!!

Default Here's how I got BT Hotsync to work

Here's how my setup looks. I took me 3 days reading every Treo forum and I finally got it to work. I have no idea why this works but it does.

I'm running a Dell Inspiron laptop with Kensington Bluetooth dongle and the software drivers that came with the Kensington Dongle. See 1st picture below.

Then I configured 2 tabs on the laptop as follows. See Pictures below.

Then initiate the hotsync from the Treo. The laptop makes a connection sound, then the Bluetooth icon at bottom right turns blue and green, instead of the normal blue and white. You double click the icon and click on okay to make connection or whatever it says. See last picture at the icon I'm referring to.

    Then it just started working.

Hoep this helps someone. Once it's going it's great. It's slow but it beats plugging the huge connector everytime to hotsync.

And don't forget to hit the reset button early and often as you are trying to get it to work.

Actually I went though this whole thing because I was getting the "port already in use" message everytime I hit the hotsync button.

What fixed it for me was the step of adding com6 and com7 to the Client Applications tab, then clicking on the lower right bluetooth icon to permit a connection to be made.

Bottom line what I got out of the whole process is that you need to have BOTH a Bluetooth Serial Port Service AND a Bluetooth Serial Port Application running at the same time. These corresponded with each tab shown in my earlier post.

Anyway, it's a tough one to solve because I wasn't sure if it's a problem with the Treo, the Bluetooth dongle, or the Laptop?

I sure hope Palm puts out better information on this.
