Bluetooth Syn Issue with Vista 64bit
Had my 650 (Verizon) working via cable to my old PC (XP SP3). Everything worked great. This PC crashed & burned. I bought a new Dell XPS 30X with Vista Home Premium 64 bit O/S. New PC also has all the bells and whistles including built-in Blutooth. Palm says there are no drivers to use on the PC to use with the cable/USB and Vista 64 but I can use Bluetooth. I downloaded the Palm Desktop software and installed it and have HotSync Manager 7.0.2 up. Unfortunately, the installations instructions do not agree with Vista 64's screens. Bottom line, Palm says I need a virtual Serial Port and the is the PC/Bluetooth manufacture's job. Dell support say it is Pam's. I am in the middle.
At this point I have the PC and the 650 recognizing each other via Bluetooth. BUT...When I do a Hot Sync from the 650 I get the "Unable to initiate HotSync operation because port is in use by another application." I am not useing any other Bluetooth application (that I know of).
This should not be this hard. I would be happy to go with a cable connection but without the driver from Palm that is a NOGO. So Bluetooth is OK, if I can get it up and synch'g. Has anyone been down this road with Vista 64 and the 650? I know others have had sync problems from reading some posts but none seem to match my components. If there is another thread that addresses my situation I would appreciate a link to it. Help appreciate.
John

Solution Found
After a lot of head-banging and finger pointing between Palm and Dell, I was able to reach the 'right person' at Palm. After days of working the problem we discovered the problem was neither Vista 64 nor the 650. Rather it was a bad Bluetooth implementation on the Dell XPS30X itself. I purchased a Bluetooth Dongle from Best Buy (over-priced store brand) and Vista 64 pulled the right drivers up and installed them. EVERYTHING WORKS!. The Palm Desktop on the PC can sync with the 650 and files can be moved from one to the other. Thanks Level3 support!

Hey oldsalt I have the 650 and switched from USB sync to blue tooth and all was going well then I started receiving the same error message, "Unable to initiate HotSync operation because port is in use by another application.". I run XP. I am using the Kensinton BT software and dongle. Since the 650 isn't my primary phone now I will work with it more this weekend. Please explain be more specific regarding your comment, '..Rather it was a bad Bluetooth implementation on the Dell XPS30X itself'. Thanks

when I was having problems syncing with bluetooth the com port number would change and not match the one in hot sync. I checked in bluetooth (control panel) and looked at the trusted devices and verified the virtual com port number. I would then look at the hot sync icon in the system tray. I just had to change the port number to match and it would work. Somestimesa reboot of the pc would correct it too...

Just trying to learn and talk at the same time here.

Jerry, as I understand it you are an XP (wish I was still on XP) user. Part of my issue had to do with Vista 64bit. When I used XP I never used Bluetooth, I used the cable and was happy as everything worked fine. As to my comment about the Dell XPS30X and its B/T implementation, all I can say it won't work and Dell could not come up with anything (except to point the finger at Palm). Once I plugged the dongle in to the USB port on the Dell box, the software (Vista 64) found a generic driver, the PC recognized the 650, and I was able to hot sync. So far everything is working great. Why the Dell XPS30X's B/T would not work, I haven't a clue. And at this point since I have a work around (and don't feel like 'fighting' Dell support) I am happy and not interested in fixing Dell's problem. Maybe when I am bored without anything to do I might revisit this but as long as I have B/T HotSync working, I am happy.
