    Default Booting/battery problem for 650

I currently have a 650 with a booting problem....does not work. Every time I try to turn the device on, I get a mesage " Battery almost empty, will shut down in 24 seconds" and the countdown begins. This occurs with the battery in or out. Currently, the only way to get the treo on is to use the a/c cord with no battery, but I still get the same message and the phone/PDA shuts off.

Has anyone else seen this problem? Cingular is saying I need to send the 650 in for repairs, but in the meantime purchase a new one (650/680) with a new 2 yr. contract for $319. And, return the new one with in 30 days in the old 650 is repaired. How crazy is that:embarassed: Let me know what you think. Thanks in advance.

I would think that you could get the newest treo model out there by renewing a two year contract at that price. I just watched some stuff that apple is making a phone for cingular only, and that has (seems like) everything the treo has and more. Including wifi built in. Release in 6 months memory 6gigs

Cingular has new or refurbished 650's on there website for 99.00 after 50 rebate so that sounds bogus and you can get a 680 at the treo store for 40.00 after rebates and they want 319.00 highway robbery people used to get hung for that! Thats more than you would spend for an 8525 if so inclined and new contract on ebay cingular stores (239.99)

With the message you are getting with the battery in or out this might not help you. I would find or borrow a battery and see if this corrects the problem. You can allways return the battery if you buy one.

If it is not the battery but the charger the same applies to returning one.

you might try and get in touch with Chris Short or siomebody like that who repairs treos and see if he has had a similar problem that he workked on. Do a Google search on that name as I dont remember what his web site is. or google treo repairs and get some names they do the repairs quicker and cheaper that Cingular or palm. Also try performancepda.com I worked with them on an antenna replacement job. They have toll free number on thier website.

    Good luck

I would think buying a new battery to try would be the best course. The error message you get could indicate the battery is in bad shape or maybe has an internal short.

If you get the same message with a new battery then I would think the Treo has a short in the charging circuit or something like that.

Of course if you have a friend with a known good Treo battery that you could borrow that would be the most inexpensive way to verify.

Let us know what you do.

This is only if I am able to upgrade and requires that I sign a new 2 year deal. Just seems unfair for existing customers. Plus, if I purchase and enter into a new contract, I want the lastest Treo. Thanks for your help.

I actually tried several batteries, and I still get the same message. I think I mayhave damaged it at some point.

I think I will give Chris Short a try, purchase a 700p or 750, and give my 650 to my wife. Thanks for your advice.

I don't think you have read the fine print . . That $40 price tag for the 680 is only for NEW customers. If you currently hold a contract with Cingular you don't qualify for that special pricing . . Is that not ignorant? Sprint/Verizon have similar policies! If your out of contract, I guess you can walk in, cancel your contract, walk out, walk back in, and say your interested in buying a phone, then ask if they got any deals on a Treo?
