Exclamation Brand New Start

I am certain this is well covered here somewhere but . . . . I have looked, albeit a brief look, and I can't find what I'm looking for. I apparently need to hard reset my 650 due to problems caused by a youngster I still hold near and dear to my heart!!

I have tracked down the reg codes and various install info for the apps I had running. I prefer NOT to restore via hotsync because this is actually giving me a chance to correct some problems I created in the beginning when I was totally clueless. (I'm only somnewhat clueless now . . .)

I want to start with a clean fresh setup this time so . . . .

1. What do I need to do as far as deleting everything but the contacts in my Palm desktop? (Remember, I want a fresh install) I could delete all including contacts and restore them from Outlook instead if that's easier)

2. What have I not thought of to prepare?

3. Anything else you pros can think of?

Thanks for indulging me on my first post.

Hello Bigdave and welcome to ET.com. Sorry to hear your first post has to be about a Treo in need of a hard reset.

Performing the hard reset without a subsequent restore will get rid of all the info on your Treo. As far as Palm Desktop goes, you'll have your media (pics, music, docs, etc.) still there. Your PIM data, like you said, will still be in Outlook.

A good uninstall app like Uninstall Manager. I get the impression you loaded up on new apps and trials and didn't have a way to truly delete everything once you decided to do so (FWIW, many of us did it that way and found ourselves in your boat...experience is the best teacher, and all that).

A good backup app like Resco Backup, OnGuard Backup, BackupMan, Backup Buddy, etc. I get the impression you don't have one of these, or you would have used a previous "good" backup set to perform a restore.

You may want to look into Reset Doctor to keep you from losing all your prefs in the event of a future crash (despite your best efforts, it may happen at some point).

As you're loading apps back onto your Treo, there are a couple things to keep in mind:

1. Make sure you're using the most current version of the apps for the 650. Versions for other model Treos or other Palm devices can be the stuff of which headaches are made.

2. Load an app, play around awhile to check for stability, then load another app. The first app should be UM (above). I'd recommend either a backup app or Reset Dr as the 2nd, and the other as the 3rd. From there, go to your favorites, one at a time.

Hi kdallen,

Thank you so much for your reply. Also, thank you for reading between the lines! You hit the proverbial nails on their proverbial heads. When I got this thing I went nuts and tried everything I got my hands on. I have enough computer savvy to realize I was creating problems for myself but was too impatient.

So, here we go. Your suggestions of which apps and their order to install was exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate the help. Hopefully this will not be the big headache I'm afraid it will be.

Any ideas as to loading and running apps from the expansion cards and keeping space on the Palm itself? I know some such as Butler have to be installed right on the Treo but I’ve found apps like Ringo Pro and Google Maps run fine from the card. Is there a preferable launcher for this? Launchers are one thing I never got around to. I tried one or two at the time but as naive as I was then (a few days ago - NOT!) I thought the launcher's only purpose was to change the "look" of the apps page. Not so smart huh.

Anyway, still not much more smarter but . . . .

Thanks again for the quick reply and great advice!

...trying this again. My first response disappeared.

Running apps off the card is a great way to save precious space in the 650's RAM and most apps were designed that way. Essentially, any app that needs "system interaction", like alarms or apps that run in the background, need to be in RAM. Nearly everything else (check manuals, read-me's or info from the developer) can be run from the card.

Launchers can be a HUGE help in saving memory and running more efficiently. There are many out there. ZLauncher (which I use) is very popular. Some others are Initiate, PowerRun, Launcher X and some use Resco Explorer. Some things I like about ZL: when you use it to move an app to run off the card, it copies the app into RAM when you open it, then moves it back off the Treo when you close it. This is a huge benefit on the 650, with its limited memory. It also has an excellent file manager, and has plugin support for things like weather, appointments, etc. to give you "today-type info" if you like.

Additional problem. Now my Treo is soft resetting over and over in a continuous loop. It gets to the point where it says I don't have enough memory and to delete data or apps and then, without letting me do anything, it resets. Over and over.

How do i stop this to be able to do the hard reset?

HELP!!!

Hi Dave:

This link should give you help with stopping the looping:
http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBC...case=obj(26419)

And this is information about the various types of resets you can perform:
http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/W...1,Case=obj(887)

Let us know how you make out.

Well, I managed to get it to stop looping. The only thing that worked was a zero out reset. Now that that is done I didn't want to just reload all the same problems so I tried changeing the backup folder but apparently wasn't smart enoughto figure that one out. Not having all night to mess with this I wound up uninstalling the Palm Desk Top software and then reinstalled it.

Right now everything is in a factory "fresh condition". One problem has come up though and before I go any further installing apps I want to see iy anyone can help me.

I am consitantly getting the following message when starting the newly installed Desk Top program - What to do PLEASE!!!!

PS - I forgot to mention that I have now managed to successfully complete the intial hotsync with the Outlook PIM info and any other bacic leaving me with 17.2 mb of free space. Woo woo!

What problems did you run into with the renaming of the backup folder?

I haven't seen that error message before but off the top of my head I'd say there was a problem with the installation of the Palm Desktop. Did you use your original CD or did you get it from their site?

I couldn't figure out how to do it! Yep, call me a dope but I went in and created a new folder in the Palm One folder and then went to "Tools >> Options >> General and changed the Data Directory folder there. It was the only place I could find to change folders. When I hotsynced it found everything I had on it before and restored the Treo to the same state it was in to begin with . . . looping restart and all! So I just uninstalled the Desk Top.

I used the CD that came with the phone. (Bought phone new 06/16/06 - Alltel) It was the same CD I originally installed from to begin with only a couple of weeks ago. (I recently got a new desktop.) I still have the Desktop software installed from before on my laptop which has all the info from a recent hotsync on it. I have to figure out how to change the backup folder or else I will have to do the whole uninstall thing on the laptop too.

Where are you now? A phone with no apps but your PIM data intact? Don't perform another sync until you rename your backup folder, even from your laptop. Whatever was corrupted may be in the backup folder on your laptop.

To rename your backup folder: Rename your backup folder (something like "oldbackup") and move it to your desktop. This will prevent any accidental syncing of the entire backup folder before you're ready.

I'd suggest uninstalling and re-installing from your cd again, as well.
