Camera exposure control on the Treo 650
Because there is no setting for controlling exposure on the 650s camera, there is the likelyhood that some of your pictures may come out too dark. Here's a simple "hardware" fix that can be used in a pinch and you'll always have the hardware with you ready to go.
If you notice that the person/object that you want to take a picture of is too dark because of backlighting (sun, other light), you can use a finger on your free hand as a simple iris by holding your finger in front of the camera lens (don't touch the lens just hold your finger close) and moving your finger partially across the lens until you get just the right amount of light. This is fooling the light sensor into allowing more light in. The shutter on the 650 has some delay after pressing the button, so here's the trick: when you have the exposure where it looks about right, press the shutter button and then very quickly move your finger out of the way of the lens. If your timing is right, the shutter will capture the picture before the light sensor has readjusted to it's original setting. I use this method frequently and have had great success with it. I've noticed also that by using this trick indoors in tungsten light (standard light bulb), I am sometimes able to correct the white balance making the shots look more natural. Experiment until you get the hang of it!
