Default Can I keep treo always connected to the internet?

    Hey everyone,

I'm just curious. I notice that after a period of time, the treo disconnects from the Internet. So if I go to check mail, it first connects, then gets the mail. What I've found is connecting to the net uses about 2kb of data and then 1-2kb to check the mail. If I'm already on the net, then it's just the 1kb or so to check the mail. Because I have a 2mb data plan, I have some questions. First, how long does the treo stay connected to the internet for before disconnecting, and second can I force it to stay on for longer? It signed on about an hour ago, I've been playing around and such, and it's still on. My data use has not changed since it's been online, so it doesn't look like any data is used while it stays connected which is why I ask. Thanks.

The Treo is designed to remain connected with the network data system. The ultimate question though is your data plan and what it costs you. Some have unlimited plans and others do not.

Right, I don't have an unlimited plan. But what I'm saying is if I don't use the treo for a couple hours, then try to check mail, it goes through the whole "Connecting to the Internet" thing which uses a few kb of data. Where as, in those 2 hours it remains online, it doesn't use any data. And if I check mail, it only uses 1kb to check the mail. What I mean is is there a way to stop it from disconnecting from the internet after a couple hours and keep it on all the time. Or what is the time that it stays on before disconnecting.

Your device should stay connected until it dies, provided the battery lasts and the signal strength is good. Signal strength is the determining factor here. Ben

Hmm yeah it doesn't. If I haven't used the phone for a few hours and go to check mail, it always has to reconnect to the internet..

What are you using when you say your device has to connect to the internet to get mail? As benjie pointed out, the Treo is designed to stay connected to your provider's data network.

Are you checking mail by using a web based service? Is the message you get when you try to get your mail that it is connecting to the internet or is it connecting to the data network or making a service connection or something like that?

I ask because in my case the connection is automatic using Sprint PCS Vision Service to connect to our Exchange Server. If I shut the phone off and restart and try to check email I get a notice about a service connection. If I use it to check personal email using Versamail, the notice indicates Connecting to IMAP Server or something like that.

I only see a message regarding the internet if I am using Blazer to go to the web.

I hope my inquiry is clearer than mud....

Steve,I have never heard of that but it makes sense. I started to post that my treo only connects when I try email or to surf the web. Then when I close versamail or blazer the phone disconnects.

But you are saying connecting for e-mail, pic mail on sprint is always connected and a assume that to surf the net that is what I am connecting and disconnecting?

Just throwing this in here....could the OP be swtiching back and forth between roaming? In the buildings where I spend most of my work day, I'm constantly going in and out of roaming. I don't mind, because, otherwise, I wouldn't have a signal. I REALLY don't mind now, because, with Sprint's data roaming agreements, I can now get a little EvDO going on Verizon or Alltel (for whatever reason, Sprint doesn't offer EvDO in SC). In any event, as I go from network to network, I sometimes have to connect, too.

Another thought....if I remember correctly from other posts, the OP is on Rogers. Given how expensive their data is, could their Treos automatically disconnect to avoid huge data charges.

    plunker and kdallen:

Your questions are good ones and I am really not sure. That is why I asked for a clarification of what the OP was specifically seeing. He keeps saying he has to reconnect to the internet and benjie and I are asking if he is connected to the data network. I believe they are different messages and different in what the Treo is trying to do. It could just be he is saying internet, but his Treo could be connecting to his provider.

I really don't use much in the way of email programs except for my corporate connection to our exchange server. I used to get aol mail through Versamail on the device, but even that I don't do much so I want to be sure what I see in the way of connection messages isn't restricted to the fact I am connecting to an exchange server on a data network. That is why I tested the aol Versamail to see what the message was.

I find nothing mentions internet except a Blazer connection.

My confusion could all be related to semantics and wording.

Thanks for the help guys, it's definitely not roaming, as I'm in Canada and there's only Rogers here for GSM. When I notice it is with VersaMail. I'll have my phone sitting awhile, I click VersaMail and then I click Get Mail. It then pops up the Mac Os 8 looking icon where it says "Connecting." "Establishing" and so on. THEN it does the connecting to IMAP and what not. Under Network preferences, it will then show "Internet - Connected." If an hour later I go back into VersaMail it's fine. But after a few hours, I go into VersaMail, click Get mail, and same thing, does the Connecting... Established and so on...
