Can I use a FM Transmitter on my Treo?

Newbie here, and wondering if I can use my Fm Transmitter for my treo. I just recently purchased the 2.5mm-3.5mm adaptor, but i have heard that when using the transmitter you only get volume out of the phone but not stereo speakers. If this is true is there any way to make the volume run thru the speakers? (in my case car speakers) Anything to eliminate the ipod!

Also, Just thought this was interesting, cheap but interesting. I have wanted a treo badly for some time now. But being a poor college student, I have not saved up the money to do so. So I bought a 650 on ebay with a cracked screen for 30$, and bought a non working 650 with a perfect screen for 30$.

I use mine all the time with the set up you described to listen to audio books in the car.
