Default computer won't recognize Treo 650

Just got a Treo 650 from a friend. Everything was working on his computer. He did a hard reset to erase everything. When I got it, I downloaded the software off the Palm website and when I try to Hotsync, my computer (win xp) won't recognize it. I get the following message on my Treo:

"The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again."

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software many times, no sucess.

Tried this solution from another forum, seemed to work for some people"

    "here's a workaround:
check first if the local USB is checked on the hotsync manager (on system tray). just make sure it is the only one checked if you're synching using a cable/cradle. if still cannot establish connection, go to device manager (right-click on my computer>properties>hardware>device manager) and launch hotsync on the treo. observe if you can see an unknown device/palm handheld on your list with a ! sign or ? ...right-click on the unknown device/palm handheld and click update driver. choose a specific location for the driver : c:/program files/palm(or palmone)/usb_drivers/ follow the rest of the prompts and then u may perform another hotsync."

However, when I check my device manager (when the Treo is plugged in and I click on sync), it doesn't show there. It seems like my computer won't acknowledge the Treo in the USB. I tried plugging it in to all 4 of my usb ports, no success. Even tried it on my other computer (vista), no success.

    Any help will be great.

Helloand welcome. first be sure that you have installed the proper Palm Desktop, there is one for XP and there is a different on for Vista. Secondly, you can checkmark Local and Local USB in the setup for the hotsync (there should be an icon on your system bar for hotsync) next, be sure that you have the connector plug firmly pushed into the bottom of the treo, sometimes it will be aschew and the thing won't sync. Lastly, when you downloaded and installed Palm Desktop did you set up a username and when you open Palm Desktop, is that same username show in the top right corner in the pull down box? during the installation of the Palm Desktop, there is a point where it asks you to plug in your treo and do a hotsync, it is right after you have chosen a username. Did you ever do that?

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I made sure I installed the proper Palm Desktop for both computers. Tried checking both, or just one. Tried cleaning the plug, pushing it in. I even tried with 2 different plugs. When I first installed the software, I set up a username and tried to sync and it didn't work. However my Treo doesn't have a username, I thought the username uploads onto the Treo when you first sync it.

    Still not working:embarassed:

No, when you are in the process of installing Palm Desktop, you will get to a screen that asks for a username, this is where you choose one and type it in that box; then a short while later, it will ask you to plug in the treo and do a hotsync. the treo does not come with a username, you have to choose one.

The other thing I want to suggest, are you absolutely sure your friend did a HARD reset back to factory settings? If not, then his username is still on the treo.

That is what I did, I choose a username and then it told me to do a hotsync, and I still got that message. I even did a HARD reset myself.

hmmm................... the only other thing I can suggest is to right click the hotsync icon on the system bar, and click setup; check for which ports it is using, it should be port 3 most times. I am at work so can't check my setup screen. I will later this afternoon though.

Do you have any idea why the Treo doesn't show up in my Device Manager when it is plugged in? Could this be a faulty Treo or cable?

    I tried this solution: "here's a workaround:
if still cannot establish connection, go to device manager (right-click on my computer>properties>hardware>device manager) and launch hotsync on the treo. observe if you can see an unknown device/palm handheld on your list with a ! sign or ? ...right-click on the unknown device/palm handheld and click update driver. choose a specific location for the driver : c:/program files/palm(or palmone)/usb_drivers/ follow the rest of the prompts and then u may perform another hotsync."

It is not showing up because for some reason you do not have the driver for it. Just for kicks, go onto your C drive and click the folder Windows, then System32, then Drivers, then look for a file marked something like "PalmUSBD".
Do you find one? Also, sometimes it is difficult to completely remove some programs from a PC, I highly recommend a free program called Revo Uninstaller. You need to completely remove your Palm Desktop and try again, I assume you do not have the installation CD for the 650? When you download and install the Palm Desktop, then reboot the PC and then you should have an icon for hotsync on your system taskbar.

Oh, one more thing, do you currently have an icon on your system taskbar for Hotsync? If not, go into Start - Programs - Palm and click on Hotsync Manager. Once the icon is on the taskbar, then try and hotsync.

Oh, you don't state which service provider your phone is locked to, Sprint, Verizon, etc.........

here is a thread that is offering the download of the actual installation CD for various 650's. Perhaps download the one that you need and try installing that Palm desktop.
