    Default Connection - Using Versamail

Hi, I just got my Treo 650 yesterday and I'm loving it so far.

I have a question about e-mail and connections.

I had it set up to autosync using Versamail so it would connect and get my IMAP mail. Great, worked with no problem. But then anytime I would go back to the phone, it would still be connected to the network, even with auto-disconnect off. Why would it do that? Does it take bandwith and drain the battery if it is constantly connected to the network?

After the mail is checked, or when I leave versamail, I would like the connection to be closed...or maybe it is alright to always have it open? (Again, coming back to my bandwidth and battery question)

I charged it full last night and I see the batter has lost a pixel of power already. I'm hoping the battery will last longer then a day!

    Thanks.

    More info?

    1. Your service provider?

    2. Why do you need to Auto-sync to check mail? Couldn't you poll
mail manually anytime and release the connection when done.

    3. How do you know your phone "would still be connected to the network"
I am not doubting you -- just need some more info to help.

    4. What are the Versamail SMPT server settings for accessing email?

    5. Also...your power management settings...?

    6. Yes...sustained or long periods of network connection can affect power
consumption. Best to be charging the phone during long periods of use.

    1. My service provider is Rogers in Canada.

    2. I'm autosyncing because I'm used to a blackberry where the e-mail is pushed to me. And I have a web hosting business where I need to be available for support.

    3. I know my phone is still connected becase next to the signal strength I see to little green arrows that only appear when I'm connected.

    4. My SMTP setting are those set by Rogers.

    5. Power management...I don't know, I haven't changed them.

Hopefully this information is of use to you...

    Thanks.

Please read the Versamail manual more carfefully when you have time:

I don't use Versamail (I use snappermail) but the following at pages 37 and 40 of
the Versamail 3.0 manual got my attention:

    Set schedule options:

Interval Select the Every pick list and select the time interval, from 5 minutes to 12 hours. Note that if you set a more frequent interval, you may need to recharge your device’s battery more often.

Start/End Time Select the Start and End Time boxes, and then select the hour, the minute, and AM or PM to enter the time for the first and last Auto Sync to
    take place. Select OK.

Days Select the days you want the schedule to be active. You can choose any number of days, but you can set up only one schedule for each email account.

    [page 40...]

    Resource issues with Auto Sync

The Auto Sync feature can cause the following resource constraints:
Decreased battery life If you set the Auto Sync interval for more often than once per hour, your device’s battery charge may drain more quickly, and you may need to recharge the battery more frequently.

Increased monthly charges Some wireless providers charge a fee for data transactions. If you use one of these providers, using the Auto Sync feature can substantially add to your monthly charges....

I am sure there is more info in the manual that could help shed some light on
    your problem.

Again..I cannot over-emphasize the need to read your user manuals more carefully.

Yes, I did read the manual, and I read all that. It even tells you that when you set the checking frequency to under 60 minutes right in Versamail. What I didn't find in the manual(s), the Palm web site, or any forum is if the Palm will stay connected to the network constantly. I thought it would connect, do it's thing, then disconnect (the little green connection arrows would dissappear.

I guess I'll have to call Rogers and see what their technical support says.

    Thanks for your assistance.
