I'd suggest pressing the other buttons first and leaving the hotsync button press until last. What usually happens is that it will go into the Bootloader (rainbow) screen if you press the hotsync button while doing the reset poke with the stylus.
You have to make sure that you are pressing the buttons correctly. The up button must be correctly pressed in the "up" position and not somewhat up and maybe a bit left or right. I find that is probably the hardest part to do.
As I've demonstrated in my video, I find that the easiest way is to hold the Treo on the side and make sure that the buttons are pressed down correctly. If done correctly, you won't get the bootloader (rainbow) screen. If you get the Bootloader screen, simply do a soft reset to get out and try again.
You may want to try Dmitry's hard reset program and see if it can perform the hard reset if you find that zero out is too hard to perform.

I finally "succeedded" doing the zero-out reset. The screen now appears blank. But as I understand, the screen will appear "dead" for only 10 minutes and the unit will then wakes up. But it has been 2 hours now since the screen appeared dead and it stayed at that state up to now. What happened?

Just as I thought I had successfully performed the zero-out reset, I was wrong. The screen went blank for more than two hours. But when I charged the unit, it went into loop reset again. I tried zero-out reset again and I always ended up with rainbow-colored boot log. Please help.

I discovered that if you hold the cradle cable hotsync button on the Palm Powered page, it takes you to another page that four different colors (red, gree, blue, white) and in small print it says "Bootload v 0.17".
Someone please help me get my phone back to normal or at least give me some advice. thnx for your concern.

I know this thread is several years old but in case you are searching for another answer to how to do a Hard Reset of a Treo 650, when nothing else has worked I offer the following.
After pulling my hair out and almost discarding my Treo 650 which was locked in an endless boot loop, and trying the standard hard reset directions that did not work and one put me into the dreaded multi-colored Boot Loop v. 0.23 screen, I discovered another ("the real way") of hard resetting my Treo 650 at the following site:

Perhaps other users have used the press and hold 3 buttons with a stylus in their teeth routine, of the prsss and hold the on/off phone button while pushing the soft reset button to no avail. If so just simply take out the batter and while holding down the on/off phone button simply reinsert the battery -- Done! Just follow the instructions from there. Good Luck.

Wow, I am at a loss. I plan on going down to a friend's house and having him look at it. If I have any tips from him that work, I will add them. Thanks, guys!
