Deleting UNWANTED software: Treo 650 - Treo Forums

I consider myself pretty savey but I can't figure this one out!
The things I want deleted:
1. Quicktour
2. Xpress Mail
3. GetGood
You know what gets me?
I pay for a device, I own it, I want to personalize it in every way to be a part of MY life and certain companies think it's appropriate to "stay tagged" with my electronics? Palm and Cingular are both claiming stupidity on the subject.
I KNOW there is a way to do it.
Please help me get the above mentioned OUT of my Treo.
Thanx... trying to keep my cool.

Those apps can't be deleted like any other app that YOU install. Those are embedded in the rom. The only way to delete the apps you mention is to either build or borrow a custom rom. There are probably other places where you can find these, but the only place I am aware of shadowmite.com. He was very successful in creating several customized rom versions. Follow the instructions perfectly, or you will have a very expensive paperweight . .

Very expensive paperweight - if you change the ROM, the warranty is no longer binding. Ben

Can you explain "the rom" in a simple, "i'm learning all of this on my own" way?
shadowmite sais: The Mac version by cpryce has not been updated lately.
So I figure it can't hurt me to learn a little more about what I'm doing before I attempt it in full.

My short answer: No . . . The longer version: Palm builds a ROM, and embedds into the ROM (Read Only Memory) certain applications. Then, Palm would build a unit for say, Cingular, and Cingular would add applications to be included into that Palm ROM. Thus the apps such as good, and quick tour, and so on . . . So a few people who feel like you do, decided to alter the rom to rid their Treos of such useless waste of ROM. So they took the code, altered it, and installed it. Of course, any updates to firmware, or bug fixes brings on new problems, because you just can't go out and grab the latest and greatest now . . . . You have a custom that is not supported by anyone, and you are pretty much on your own if you have problems . . . New app isn't working right? Is it because the altered ROM won't let it, or because the app is buggy? What about a warranty? No such thing with an altered ROM. (no such thing with a Treo and Cingular anyway, however) But a legit problem will be recognized with an unaltered ROM. A custom ROM means no support at all!

Yea, I don't like a lot of the trash on my Treo, but have learned that living with it, is a better risk than living without it . .

That was easy enough to understand. It appeared relatively easy for you to explain. What's going on with this world? I've been asking questions for over a month from Palm and Cingular and getting those looks and answers like "What are you stupid?"... they real kick is when they follow it up with "That's not possible." This is when you know they are pulling your leg.
Thank you again. I'll think on it for awhile, maybe find a used treo to try it out on first.

I think you'll find that most of the mods (and senior members here) have been in your shoes before. We're just sharing what we learned through trial and error.

It is the "Oh gosh!" thing that keeps me from doing the ROM change. I downloaded the tools, did the setup and stopped there - what if...
