Default Desperate (Can't make/receive calls or update my software)

Well, first of all, this all happened because I'm an idiot.
I just bought an unlocked 650 (Cingular) with the intention of using it with T-mobile. Without realizing it, I downloaded and installed the Verizon version of the software. Not only does it not match my phone (CDMA vs. GSM), but now I can only make and receive sporadic calls. I tried to update the version of the software (I currently have 1.01), thinking that my problems were bug related, but my phone resets itself while my computer says, "Device version invalid". Then, I tried to use a different updater (the Cingular one I should have used in the first place), but that wouldn't work either. I have tried all four types of resets and each one improves the frequency of completed calls for about 2-5 minutes. After that, it's back to square one.
Is there any way to change the software you have installed? I thought a hard reset would do it but, evidently, I was wrong.
I would appreciate ANY help I can get, as I bought this phone less than three days ago and I really don't want to give up on it, yet.

What if I install the wrong version?
Don't worry, you won't damage your Treo 650 by attempting to install the wrong version. You simply will not be able to proceed with the update, and you will receive the error message This update is not compatible with this device. If this happens to you, follow the steps below to properly back out of the incorrect installation, and start the correct one.
  1. When you see the error "This update is not compatible with this device," select OK immediately. This should keep your personal data intact, and delete only the incorrect installer version.
  2. On your desktop computer, go to the Treo 650 Updater window and click the Cancel button at the bottom of the installer.
  3. If asked to confirm the cancellation, click OK.
  4. Close the installer by hitting Cancel.
  5. Go to the Treo 650 Updater page and download the version for the provider from whom you originally obtained your Treo 650.

I tried to install the Verizon version of the updater (Verizon is the software I currently had). That's when I got the "Device version invalid" error during Hotsync.

On the palm site (upgrades of versions) I think I read it right if you are changing carriers do not change the firmware but keep your orginal firmware for that carrier. I might be wrong but read on when to upgrade or somewhere like that.

Does this help

Solution ID: 38347

Installing the Treo 650 Updater if have removed your subsidy lock or changed service providers

Some mobile service providers allow you to remove the subsidy lock on your smartphone (info). To inquire about removing the subsidy lock, contact your service provider. Not all providers will remove the subsidy lock.
This article applies if you had your provider remove the subsidy lock, then moved to another provider. Or, if you're not sure where your Treo 650 came from, we can help you below.
How does this relate to the Treo 650 updater?
The Treo 650 Updater (check availability) comes in several versions. Usually, you should install the version that corresponds with your provider, but not if you had your subsidy lock removed.
If you purchased your smartphone from one provider, removed the subsidy lock, and then started service with a new provider, use the Treo 650 Updater version for your original provider (not your current one).
Look at Phone Info to find out which version you need
The Phone Info screen can tell you which mobile service provider your phone originally used, and thus which version of the Treo 650 Updater you should use.
  1. Press Phone/Send .
  2. Press Menu .
  3. From the Options menu, select Phone Info.
  4. In the "Software" item, look at the letters after "Treo 650-X.XX." See the chart below to learn which version of the Treo 650 Updater you need. Note: The "X.XX" in the Software Version can be any numbers.

I know which updater I need. I downloaded it onto my computer and started the updating process, but I keep getting an error message during the Hotsync. It says, "Device version invalid"

You say you have tried all four types of reset? Are you sure that the hard reset was done successfully It can be tricky to do successfully. And the zero out reset should have cleared out the poroblem.

As far as I know I did the hard reset correctly. I held down the power, up, and hotsync buttons, while pushing the reset button with my stylus. Is that correct? Is there another way to do a zero out?

there are other threads in the 650 forum regarding the various resets especially the hard and zero out resets which describe how to do them. If you will get the information and read through it to make sure you followed all the steps. Also there are knowledge base articles at the palm web site on the zero out reset and hard reset that you can look a. I have never done either (knock on wood) so I have no personal experience I just remember reading in a thread here on ET that thge up selection on the 5 way must be done precisely or it may not be successful. You may have done ir right

Like plunker has said you should not have been able to proceed with the install of thew wrond updater and it may be that you have some other problem(s) not rerlated to the update issue.

That's what's confusing me. I tried the Cingular updater and it said that I couldn't install it because I had the verizon version. So how did I get the verizon version on there, when it's a cingular phone? I can't figure it out. Is there anywhere I can download the Unlocked version other than the Palm website? When I download it from there, I get this message saying that there are no files to extract and that the zip file is corrupt/invalid.
