Default Document viewer...

I need an application that can read and display various file formats such as .doc, pdf, txt, rtf and occasionaly an xls or two. I don't need to alter them, the possibility to do so would be added value, but my main goal is to be able to read them.

Is there an application that can handle all this or will I need an application for each file format?

Documents to Go can handle all those types I believe. A viewer version of it should have been included on the CD you received with your Treo 650. That version doesn't support pdf files though. You could use the freeware PalmPDF to view them instead.

If you get the latest Documents to Go, you'll be able to edit all the file types you listed except for pdf (but it does including viewing them).

As far as I know, Docs To Go can not parse RTF files. Double check me on that, though. I've heard good things about MobiSystems Office Suite which definitely can, and looks quite polished. I've got no personal experience with it. The simplest solution is probably to resave your RTF document as a DOC document. If you insist on the RTF format, I think there are a couple of free or cheap RFT readers out there.

You're right that Docs To Go doesn't support native RTF files which surprises me. Good catch!

The only way it supports them is to convert them with the desktop tool before syncing.
