Done my research, still have questions about soft reset
Greetings, all. Been lurking around for a while now, and I've tried to do some research prior to asking a question. After a few hours of searching and reading posts about 650 soft resets, here are my issues.
I bought a Treo 650 for Verizon from a trusted source on eBay. Activated phone, and have been using it happily for nearly two months. Great product, nice to have an all-in-one unit, like the palm platform, you get my drift.
My firmware is 1.04 (which is most recent version).
I received the phone after a hard reset had been performed, according to the seller. The phone came "naked", without any 3rd party applications. I did not install any apps until yesterday.
But, every since I first used the phone from day one, I noticed the phone undergoes a soft reset three to five times a day. Daily. Every day...even before installing any apps. The resets seem to be at random times.
Other than random soft resets, the phone has been flawless. Never a dropped call, only a soft reset that the phone quickly recovers from.
Yesterday I installed SplashID and VolumeCare (both the most recent versions). Phone continues to do random soft resets, as it always has prior to installing these apps.
I learned about the neat #*#377 trick just today, and SplashID was one culprit, I forget the other. I think it was some computer language I can't recall now.
Should I do a zero reset and revert my firmware back to 1.03?
Should I do a zero reset and re-install 1.04? Re-install it twice?
Should I dance like a chicken while howling at the moon?
Should I upgrade to a 700p? $$
From the posts I have read, it seems many, if not the majority, of Treo 650 users are able to get to a point where they have to sit through a minimum of soft resets.
Some of you accomplish this by avoiding all 3rd party apps, and your phone stabilizes. (Mine was unstable even before 3rd partys apps.)
Some of you have gone through wickedly complicated reset procedures and your phone stabilizes.
Some of you even get to install some beloved 3rd party apps and your phone stays mostly stable.
Is this issue largely individualized based on the exact phone we each have?
How can I enjoy a more stable phone and still get to install a few trusted 3rd party apps?
And, just for FYI:
I don't utilize Verizon's wireless synch, and don't plan on it.
I don't surf the web over my phone, and don't plan on it.
I use Mac OSX Tiger (10.4.3) and utilize MissingSynch software.
I don't have a warranty on the unit, as it was a private sale.
I use the supplied USB cable to synch with my Mac. (appears to be OEM).
Your thoughts?

i don't think it had truly been hard reset or i think it was a hacked rom. mine never resets on it's own even with many 3rd party apps. i always install them one a a time though to ensure that they're working right. personally i'd try a hard reset again and see if the problem still occurs before installing any other apps. if it does i'd reinstall the 1.04 rom from palm's website...make sure you get the one for verizon. ive never done it on a mac, but that was the first thing i did on mine was update the software and it runs great.

Ricker, I'd suggest doing the hard reset. Before that, change the name of your backup folder on your computer to "oldbackup", or something. Moving it to the desktop wouldn't be a bad idea (I've heard of some people changing the name of their backup folder but Palm Desktop still recognizing and using it). Do the hard reset and your first sync will just give you your PIM data. Add one app at a time, with a soft reset after each addition. I think you might get the stability you're looking for.

I agree with kdallen do a hard reset. I would not install anything thing until you have made sure your soft reset problems are gone.

Okay then...
Thanks for the advice, folks. I did a hard reset, re-installed VZW 1.04, and followed it with a hard reset, then a soft reset.
So far, only one random soft reset in the last 24 hours...
Here's hoping...
