Default Freezing after Sync adding photos

Yesterday I put a whole lot of photos into the "Quick Install" (to the card) and after sync got a message that said, among other things, album name cannot include...and various symbols. This caused the phone to lock completely. I have Splash Photo which I have deleted, I've deleted all accessible photos previously stored on the phone, and until today, the phone (after many soft resets) works but will not sync for anything. The sync screen goes grey, nothing happens except the phone locks again and has to be reset using a soft reset. Any suggestions?

if you have backup software be sure and do a backup. If you done think long and hard about getting backup software.

Windows, even the fabulous WinXP, is very picky about certain ASCII characters appearing in directory or file names. \ / : * ? " > < and | are prohibited, but may not be detected until certain operations are performed. If you look at your photo names, be sure none of them appear. I'm not sure how this could have corrupted your Treo, however.

Hard reset may help, but try a warm reset first. You won't lose your other data.

Backing up can help restore an unstable Treo, but only if it's done before the Treo becomes unstable. If you do use a backup util, only selectively restore critical personal info (contacts, etc.) and not the entire device.

Be sure the photos are no longer in the Install list. Your PC may still be trying to install them. If they're there, delete them.

If you can get your Treo to sync, install Filez and delete the contents of the card's DCIM directory. You'll lose other photos/thumbs/albums, but there may be corrupted image files in there as well.

Thanks for this considered opinion. I was a little alarmed at the speed at which Treofrog suggested doing a "hard reset". That's serious stuff and, having had to do one previously for another problem, it causes hours of work to re-load your "add-ons" that somehow for some unknown reason didn't re-load. And jayfa112851 going on about "back-up" without realizing (as you did) that backing up after the problem was already there would only cause the problem to be re-introduced back into the device after the hard reset! Yes, I do back everything up but after my prior hard reset it seemed that half of the "stuff" wasn't re-installed. I guess I'll have to do it which should fix this but I've got to be in the right frame of mind before hand! Thanks again.

Wow, this blows me away photos can shut down the treo. I thought photos were the safest thing to put ona pc or phone.

Reading your post and error message is/are the song titles or an album title the problem. Did you just create some new albums? I know this does not help you, but may help others placing titles on photos and albums.

    I just had another thought.

If your photo conduit has a setting to sync photos from the Treo to your PC, disable it. Your PC may be trying to import improperly named image files. It's certainly worth a try, but it sounds like your Treo's freezing up before that stage of the hot sync.

    Good luck!

Kabeyun has given you very solid advice, better than I could have, for certain! I read where you said you deleted the suspect photos. I was wondering if you deleted them in both locations: the PC and the Treo? I think you know it but my card photos are stored on my laptop in a location such as C:\Program Files\palmOne\yourhotsyncid\Photos\offline copy location\7193

But I do have a suggestion for when you do get your Treo back into a stable state . . I often "put" several pictures in an album at one time. But I do it directly from my PC to my Card. I have a card reader on my laptop, and will place the SD card in it, and create a folder on the card in the DCIM folder location, and will then place the pictures from the PC into that folder. I then, place the card back into the Treo, and of course can then access from the Treo. For several photos at once, this is a lot faster than using hotsync. I also use the same approach for placing MP-3's on my Treo. Hope this helps.

Well, having been there before in the long ago world of the 650, the options listed above with the exception of the hard reset are viable options. Naming was my problem and my fault; after I renamed the file and tried it again, no more problems were experienced.

As mentioned above, a hard reset is a last resort and if done, great care has to be taken to insure that the restore does not restore it to the same problem. To avoid that, a device based backup application is an ideal solution; there are several good applications out there with great support. My personal preference is Resco Backup.

For most situations, a warm reset is a better option than a hard reset.

The suggestion to use a card reader is what I normally do when moving big files around. Doing it that way removes bunches of complications that can cause bunches of hours of wasted time to correct an option. The card reader route means only the files moved can cause the problem, not something else that might have hitched a ride for joy causing problems.

Also, when getting ready to play, ALWAYS make a backup of your device and always make sure you maintain a good NUMBER of good backups (love those good things). One good backup can get overwritten through multiple playing. I maintain 9 backups. Why? Well, I have always believed in a GOOD number of backups; one day though I decided that having had NO problems for a while, I would reduce it to 2 backups. Oh gosh! that same day I played and played and played and found myself having installed too many things and when it came back to restoring, all of my GOOD 2 BACKUPS had been over written. Luckily though, I had hot sync'd to the desktop with Backup Buddy Pro and had a GOOD by OLD backup there that I was able to restore from. The restore done and four applications updated put me back in GOOD shape and a subsequent resetting to 9 BACKUPS has me in great shape.

The bottom line - bad things happen. GOOD things can be made to happen.

    :laugh3:
Don't know what's causing it as I loaded individual photos, not albums. Then took out all the individual ones that I could locate. However the two "albums" created in the download don't display any photos but I'm unable to empty them as "This album cannot be deleted because at least one item is stored in an incompatible format"! Go figure!
