Default General Preference Option Missing from Phone

While searching the forums for a way to stop the LED light from blinking when the phone is not charging, I came across a General Preference that should show up in the Phone Application (Blinking LED When In Coverage).

I found it in the following thread. Like the guy there, my phone simply does not have this option available. Unlike that guy, I haven't installed anything--the phone is brand new.

Any ideas why an option would not appear? Has this happened to anyone else? The light is annoying and I'd like to turn it off!

Thanks.

Who is your carrier? As was the case in that thread, his carrier was the same as mine, yet I had the option and he didn't.

You might want to call your carrier and ask what the deal is.

My carrier is Alltel. I'll check with them.

Do let us know what they say. This seems to be part of the software and it is surprising to me there could be so many differences with items like this.

It seems to be they would have to go out of their way to eliminate the option. Of course that doesn't mean Sprint didn't add the option in one version and decided not to in others!

Very confusing...

In case another Alltel customer wanders in looking for some answers about the inability to turn off the LED in a Treo 650, here is my exchange with Alltel Support:

Customer (Gracie L.) - 12/20/2006 01:09 PM
While searching the Internet for a way to stop the LED light from remaining lit on my Treo 650 when the phone is not charging, I came across a General Preference that should show up in the Phone Application (called: Blinking LED When In Coverage).

This preference appears on other people's Treo 650 phones, but is absent from mine. (None of them were Alltel customers.)

Could you let me know why...

1) there might be a discrepency regarding available preferences that seem like they should be part of the phone rather than the service provider,

and

2) how do i get the LED to to turn off when the phone is not charging?

Thank you!

Response (David H) - 12/21/2006 12:45 PM
Hi Gracie,

Thank you for your question. I checked every setting and preference in the Treo650 and could not find anything that would govern the behavior of the LED. The software is designed by Palm and Alltel, unfortunately, has very little control over how the software is designed. There is unfortunately no way to turn the LED off except by powering the phone application off (PDA is still on).

I hope that answers your question; thank you for choosing Alltel Wireless!

Thank You,
Alltel Data Tech Support Team

Out of luck, I downloaded LEDOff (on advice I found here, not from Alltel) and it works like a charm. (http://mytreo.net/downloads/details-241.html?LEDOff)

Ahhhh...The old "It's their fault, not ours". Also appears as "It's not our fault, it's theirs", depending on the vendor.

I guess they only added their logo, eh?

Glad you found a way to make it work for you.

Happy holidays,

I was always under the impression that the 650 comes with no preferences that control LED behaviour.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that's why someone developed programs like Butler and LEDOff (LEDOff is freeware ) that give you options to disable LED blinking/activity.

Give those a try, see if it helps, because that's usually what adds those functions to your preferences.

LEDOff is working great, Hero. The only reason I had a question about it was because some Treo users do have preference in the phone app for this thing.
