Default Happy w/ 650?

My firm is presenting me with the option of a blackberry or a Treo (either would be with Cingular). I've done some research and it seems that there are problems with the Treo perpetually needing to be reset. How valid are these issues? Is it a matter of the people who are most unhappy making the most noise? Are the reset issues caused by software added to the Treo or certain firmware updates? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Default It Depends

I'd say it really depends on what you're doing with it. I've only had to reset my Treo a few times and have had it a little over a month now. It crashed when I was trying to run some older Palm apps I had from a previous phone. Bad idea BTW.

I have the Treo here at work and everyone else has Blackberrys. If all you are going to be doing is e-mail, then Blackberry is an option to consider. If you are going to be doing some office doc creation and the like, then go Treo. The ability to create documents, spreadsheets and the like on the go is invaluable for me and that's why Blackberry wasn't an option.

The Treo screen is higher quality and good for some quick videos and mp3 action while in transit also.

Good luck!

I guess I should have given additional information. I have historically been a Palm user (Tungsten E) which recently gave out, and am using an older Blackberry just to receive email. My contract for the older Blackberry expires next week and I'm going to get rid of it. I don't really like the PDA functions of the Blackberry, and would like better web browsing capability (I may be able to get the latter from the newer blackberry). The ability to use excel and word would be very helpful, particularly with opening certain email attachments. The most important thing is the email, but the other items are very important also. My main concern is the stability of the Treo.

Rating or Review Treo 650 versus Blackberry..a little info that might help

I have never had a Blackberry although my brother does. He is an exec with Compaq and marvels at my Treo. He claims my Treo does so much more than his Blackberry. Unfortunately he says he has to stay with the "company issued" devices to be on the same page with his work associates.

IMHO, the Blackberry is more of a "down and dirty" email device. The Treo is more of a complete smartphone solution. Becuase of it's Palm OS roots, there is so much you can do with your Treo beyond checking email.
  • Surf the web
  • Manage all of your contacts
  • Have your calendar/datebook at your side
  • SMS messaging
  • MP3 player (with a $5.95 adapter and you're headphones)
  • Plays Movies with a free 3rd party player
  • Allows for SD storage - carry photos, music, documents
  • Can turn into a full fledged GPS system
  • Bluetooth - wireless headset
  • Hi Rez screen
  • Tons of games
  • Highly customizable
  • Manage your finances
  • Great support forum here at Everything Treo.
There are plenty more reasons why the Treo earned the title of Best Convergence Device.

I am less than a week into my Cingular Treo and can tell you (as a vet of PalmOS PDAs) that all of the resets have been ther esult of thrid-party software. I have the latest ROM update on my 650 and it works quite fine. Battery life and all if very well.

I would recommend a BB if that is what your business standarizes on, or if you want a mainly email, with occasional phone calling, kind of solution. If you are looking for a more well rounded device, the 650 is a better call. The number of availiable applications alone can make it a good call, but if you never install an app, the overall experience is quite nice and polished. Much more so than on the BB side of things IMO.

Hi,

I've had my Treo 650 for just over a month now. Only hassles I've had were when I initially set it up bulk restoring the files from my Tungsten C. Seems that I also did a file restore from the previous Sony Clie to the TC and that there were still some Sony specific apps (no memory sticks on a Palm) in there and some old apps. that were causing problems.

I did a hard reset and followed Palm's instructions for upgrading to a Treo:

http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/W...se=obj(7628)#0

Other glitch was the auto time out resettng itself to 30-seconds after a phone call. The 1.17 ROM upgrade fixed that -- the second time I did a hard reset and none since.

I use mine all day, everyday. I have quite a few apps on it and no glitches or problems. I'm still learning and still getting impressed by what I can do with it. Originally, I was going to get a Blackberry 7105t (T-Mobile) but the variety of software, etc. for the Treo 650 won me over. I'd gladly do it all over again.

This is a good page to bookmark as Palm has some video guides and illustrated tutorials on the Treo 650 which will save some time and get you up and using it quickly:

http://www.palm.com/us/support/treo/treo650cingular/

The only real hassles with getting a Treo 650 is deciding which case, bluetooth headset, etc. to get.

Good luck!

I failed to mention that you can read, edit and create Office documents including Word, Powerpoint and Excel directly from the Treo.

I used to carry a notebook with me pretty much everywhere. Ninety-five percent of what I was using it for a Palm could do so I switched. Used to use a spreadsheet app on the Palm to do job quotes, etc. Wrote pages of text via Graffiti, too. Add in a cell phone and net access...WOW...the Treo is awesome.

You didn't get the espresso module for yours yet? Maybe it's a Cingular only item right now. Won't fit in your pocket when attached, but it's pretty cool:
