Question Hard reset?

sorry if this has been asked before but I searched and did't find anything

I had to reinstall hotsync on my laptop and when I tried to hot sync my treo is ask to setup a new account..yada yada...

It then requires a password! I don't remember setting up a password on it when I first got it. My understanding is that the only way to change the password is to do a Hard reset.

Questions:

1)What happens during a hard reset (what do I lose)

2)If I'm doing a hard reset should I now update my frimware? I am cingular and current firmware version is treo650-1.04-cng. I read before that the update cause some phones not to work and the people are screwed.

3)If fireware upgrade is suggested and it screws up my phone what are my option?

This is my company phone and was bought by them I really don't want to screw it up and cost the another $500.

I guess my only other option is to never hotsync. Anyone ever not hotsync??

Thanks in advance.

edit:oh yeah the only program installed that is not original is snapper mail enterprise edition. and a 1gig SD

The Treo basically goes back to factory defaults and all your data is gone. The only thing that sticks around is the carrier specific settings.

Yes, you should update your firmware right after you do the hard reset before you load anything on your Treo.

Getting the phone replaced under warranty I believe. If you don't think you need the firmware update, then don't worry about updating it.

Well, it's certainly possible if you don't need to sync information from your PC, but you should definitely backup your Treo to the SD card if you don't hotsync.
