Hi Everyone, absolute newbie...Have treo, ( not activated yet) don't want to use web or e-mail. Dont have time when I am away from home and am paying for www at home. I think Verizon will make me pay data charge per use...Is there a way to make sure it cant go online by itself or by accident ? I want all the great things it can do . Any ideas ? thanks Doug

Hi webrunner:

Welcome...When you say you want all the great things the Treo can do, I guess that excludes the ability to stay connected? Web access and email are two of the most important features for me. Of course that is easy for me to say since I don't pay for it, the company does!!!

That said, if you have signed up with Verizon and you have not signed on for a data plan, won't that stop your device from connecting? I don't think that you will be able to use any of the connected features if you haven't agreed to pay for the data usage.

I am sure the Treo experts on this board will be able to give you a positive yes or no.

Good luck,
SteveTaz

Rest assured: if you bought no data plan, you'll get a message to that effect if you launch the browser. Furthermore, no apps will "accidentally" access data unless configured to do so. Verizon has two flavors of data plan: limited (by KB) and unlimited. Either way you've got to pony up before you can download anything. The only way I can think of that you could get hosed is if you start receiving lots of text pages or PIX/FLIX, but paging allowances have their own separate fee schedule.

Welcome aboard!

consider dropping VErizon and jumping to Spriont. Their unlimited visionplan is only $15/month....to have the world-wide-web at your finger tips.

Underneath that quote lies a marketing person. "...world at your fingertips".

I've got a 650 on Verizon myself, and also had no need to use the web browser or email functions. I've got the per-use data plan as well and have had no troubles. It notifies you before it tries to connect so just click on "no". I have heard that MMS messages can use Verizon's "National Access" network and basically be sent as email attachments, thus having a pretty hefty charge for using data. As for me, I use MMS all the time and haven't seen anything funny on my bill.
