Default Help, please: putting files onto my 650...

Fellow Treo drivers:

I'm palm OS challenged over here. I'm starting to delve into my Treo 650 file management functions, but I'm stuck.

I don't know how to transfer .mp3's and palm Desktop contacts into my Treo! You'd think a simple synching would do it. And failing that you'd think a right-click would display a shortcut menu to "send to handheld.".

Alas, I'm not getting any results.

If any of you can help a palm file management dummy over here, I'd appreciate it!

The way I transfer MP3s to my Treo is to copy the MP3s from my music library to my SD card.

As far as contacts, if your contacts are in your Palm desktop, just customize your HotSync folder temporarily. At HotSync, choose Custom, scroll down to the bottom to Backup, highlight it and click on Change and change the setting to Desktop overwrites Handheld. I believe it will default back to Handheld overwrites Desktop after your sync.

plwebb:

I tried your "desktop override handheld" suggestion, but to no avail. My palm Desktop contacts still do not synch down onto my Treo. And I can't figure out how to get an mp3 file onto my 650 either.

Aaaargh!!!

Ok. Use the Palmone Quick install software. Drag your mp3 files to your SD card. There you go. As far as sincin' up your contacts, make sure you've setup "Desktop overrides palm".

Does it say in your hotsync log that your contacts (or anything else for that matter) have failed to sync up? I ran into that problem about a week ago. There may be an easier way to handle this, but here is what I did. I copied the files OCaddrCAT.dat and OCmapInfoM.dat (these are where all of your contact information is stored) from C:\program files\palmone\treo\address to a directory of my choosing. I then completely uninstalled and reinstalled the palm desktop software from my computer and did the initial hotsync. After I did that, I moved the previously copied files from the directory that I created to C:\program files\palmone\treo\address. I then completed a hotsync using the "desktop overrides handheld" custom setting. Everything has worked since then.

shotelimox:

I'll try that. Thank you for the detailed description of the file management.

(FYI: I don't have a secure digital memory card, yet. All of my efforts thus far are to storing directly to my 650 native storage. I hope that is not a showstopper.)

Are you syncing your treo to the correct user profile?
Do you have contacts listed in your Palm desktop software that you can see?
To make sure that you are syncing to the correct profile, on the top right corner of your Palm desktop, there is a column that says user: you should see your profile name here. Go to your treo and tap on the hotsync icon and in the top right corner it should also show the same user profile. Are they the same?

You can transfer mp3's to your sd card with the palm quick install however depending on the size of the mp3 files can take a painfully long time. Double click the "palm quick install" icon and click on "add" at the bottom, select the file to install and it will place it up top in "handheld", single click and hold that file and drag it to the bottom section "expansion card". The next time you sync, it will transfer that file to your sd card that is in your treo.
But it's best to have a card reader attached to your pc and then you can simply copy the mp3 files to the card in the reader. It's much faster. Then just put the sd card back in your treo.

You are trying to put MP3 files into the Treo without an SD card? I do not believe you can do that. I believe they must be placed in a music folder on an SD card. You can't put MP3 files into the Treo memory.

That's correct: I have no SD card yet.

What you say above makes sense... or at least, it explains my problems thus far.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and purchase a secure digital card?
