Help Unknown Data activity - Treo Forums

I have been getting some strange data activity on my Treo 650 using Verizon. Here is my basic set up. I have the built in Verizon wireless sync set up but set manual sync. Versa mail 3.0 is installed buy set to only check for mail manually. Every other application I have on the phone that will perform any type of data request is either turned off or set to manual.

I have been still seeing some type of data activity ( the Orange data light goes on for 10-15 seconds) at irregular intervals. Sometimes every 2 minutes, sometimes 5 minutes between sessions. I do not see any change in my data or new messages. Nothing seem to be different in my system except this issue is draining my battery.

I have gone to the trouble of doing a total system re-set and fresh install. The issue seems to first show itself when I set up a account in Versa mail. Then it pretty much goes on constantly.

Any ides? This has Verizon and Palm tech support baffled. I know the obvious suggestion would be “don’t use Versa mail” This might be the only option, but I like the program and it would seem there is another solution. It is not like I have a fly-by night application causing this problem. Its Versa mail; not Pete’s Palm mail Beta 1.1 here.

Just as general info. I have set up other POP account like GMAIL to see if this still happens and unfortunatly it does.

One way you could find out for sure if its Versamail, is to install a Trial of Agendus, Snappermail, or Chatter, and delete your config in Versamail and see if it still does it . . .

I am currently running a beta of Chatteremail and am so happy I don't have to fool with VersaMail and all the headaches it caused me. Chatter's betas are IMHO 100 times more stable than Versamail. For my experience, it caused more screen freezes, system resets, and corrupt databases than any other app I have installed on my Treo . . .

Um... a flashing orange LED does not indicate data activity, it means that your Treo is looking for a network (phone) connection. This can cause it to run down the battery quickly, as it keeps trying to find a connection.

Kreth, Thanks for the suggestion, and I do not mean to come off as condescending. It is really hard to think this is the issue. I will concede a orange light may indicate the device is searching for a network connection. What would compel the device to repeatedly re-connect to the same network? I have a updated tower programming. I use the *228 programming at regular intervals to keep current.

The activity I am seeing is while the device is stationary, locked onto good/strong signal (3 bars or better), and the problem recurs at 2-5 minute intervals. As I mentioned the activity only occurs after setting up a initial POP mail account in Versa mail, then does not stop.

The other test we did was use a different Treo. I had another phone delivered ( to see if the device had a problem) and the exact same issue happened. The problem appears to be software related to Versa Mail and a POP account.

Any other Thoughts/ideas would be appreciated.

I will go back to my original response . . Download a 3rd party app and see if its any better. I know you think that because its "Versamail" that its a personal problem. Do a search on this or any other Treo forum and see the many issues that people have had with Versamail. It appears that everything you yourself have done so far has told you just that.

If Snapper or Chatter gives you the same results, its your Treo . . If they don't its your Versamail application. I know I have been so much happier since I quit trying to use Versamail
