I googled high pitch noise Palm Treo and found several articles. You might want to spend more time reading them than I did.

Here is a review that one guy gave . . .
After we purchased 2 of these there was one of them that had this high pitched noise that would happen when you turned it on. We called Palm and they told us that the noise is something that can't be fixed and it won't harm the machine. The customer service people were really obnoxious and told me in a very snide way that the buzzing information is on their website and that they won't replace it. Well I went to the website and after navigating through many areas I found the disclaimer in an obscure spot on the Tech support page. You all may want to look at this before you purchase them because it's sheer BUZZZZZ hell to try and get it fixed. I find it interesting that only one of them has the Buzz noise and not the other. We were out $300 bucks and ended up buying a Dell Axim which by the way is nice and silent when it's turned on.

I think you're stuck with it unless stillrockin's tips help. Try turning down the brightness (option-P) and see if the buzz softens. In some cases the buzz will diminish as the screen "burns in." If your Treo is new, there's hope. If not, you may need to get used to it. :frown:

Me too. Mine did have a softish buzz that, after about 6 months, gradually became inaudible.

Sorry your issue couldn't be solved here, but welcome to ET.com anyway!

Just a thought but might it be that the wire or wires to the speaker from the board is somehow messed up or loose and thats what causing the noise or if its near a wireless network or cordless phone that intereference could be causing the noise.

It could also be gremlins. He'd still have to live with it or send it in.

gremlins are just as likely if not more and they would have to be lived with or exorcised the wires might be fixable if he wanted to take it apart and check that out or pay the $$ to someonbe to do it for him. Or there's always high priced target practice!
