holux gpslim 236 not working

Guys I just got my gpslim brand new and sealed from a holux dealer on ebay. I've been working on this since last night and I've been searching on the board for some fix. I finally got my treo BT to see the holux and I enter the key 0000 to save it, per Chris notes I found I downloaded the update 5.12 I think it was and installed it.

1 how can I confirm that it took
2 Do I need to install the software that came w/ it on my pc if i'm using the tomtom? I did but I'm not sure if it's really helping. I plug the usb to the holex and to my pc but the gps viewer looks for com port so it doesn't find any since i'm using a USB, then when I click open gps it just gives date and time. I also checked other links here where it said to use the "Other NMEA GPS" at 38400 one minute it will say no gps device then some times it will say lost the signal. I will try to give these people a call but I can't right now, so I wanted to know what you guys thought.

23. Select the outbound Bluetooth port of your PDA.
Tap and hold the selection 'Bluetooth Serial Port…' to see the complete name.
Check the list below if you don't know the outbound Bluetooth port of your PDA.

Also the BT keep showing up that it found the GPS and once I select it. it goes to the tomtom and it will say "Waiting for vaild GPS signal" then about 10 secs my light cuts off so by the time I click on the it to turn on it goes back to no gps device.
