Homemade WAV Ringtones
I am looking for help dumping my homemade WAV ringtones into my Treo "sounds" folder. I am trying to do it on the cheap as I do not have a data package with my carrier (Cingular). My WAV is 539Kb and it would cost me $5.39 to mail it to myself (which is what I will do if I have to, although I have never set up a VersaMail account). I have tried dropping it on the handheld via PalmOne Quick Install. And I am poised and ready to reinstall VFS Exchange (which I installed and removed a day ago because I couldn't figure out what I was doing - I couldn't find much in the way of instructions anywhere and figured that I better stop messing with it before I really screwed something up). Anyway, I don't want to have to purchase a ringtone management program because I'm not looking for bells and whistles (MP3 ringtones and a different ringtone for each and every contact). So, moving the file from either my desktop or the card (because I can get it there) to my "sounds" folder...Help???!!!

Do you have filez or another file manager? I have not done this before but read a post here where you (I think) move the tone from your card to the treo file that has your tones. The ringtone may have to be a wav. file. I am sure someone will have more detailed info here.

file manager
I don't have a file manager. My only access to the "sounds" file is through the Sounds icon on the "homepage" from there I can decide which tones will be played by the Phone and at what volume. I can manage the listed tones, but I can only add tones by using the recorder (not good sound quality). I see now that I could send sounds from this file by beaming, Bluetooth, messaging, or VersaMail. But I am still looking for a method of sending sounds to this file besides Bluetooth, messaging, or emailing (my desktop computer is not Bluetooth enabled). I will look for a freeware file manager, I think you're putting me on the right track. Thanks.

FileZ help
OK. I am working in FileZ, but I am having trouble moving or copying the file on the external card to the internal memory. After I have selected the WAV and selected either move or copy, when I get to the screen that says "Choose (destination) Folder" and lists "Internal" and "External" I can't get "Internal" to expand (and if I ever do get it to expand, I really am not sure which folder I want to dump the WAV into in order to use it as a ringtone). I can get the "Internal" folder list to expand in other situations. I have also gotten the file transfer to start with "Internal" selected without specifying a folder (in that case the transfer stops because "there was an error during copy/move"). Any FileZ experts out there? What am I doing wrong?

You simply just need to select the Internal. I won't expand because there is no subfolder. As long as the triangle is black, it is selected.
With FileZ, you tap on the triangle to make a folder expand or collapse. If you tap on the individual file, you are selecting it. You can only select one file or folder at a time.

OK. Got it. Any idea why it doesn't want to move or copy my file? When I attempt to copy or move a file from the card to "Internal" by darkening the triangle next to it I get this error: (Message: There was an error during copy, stopping.)

Have you tried to use palm quick install? Just drop it/or copy the file to the treo (not the card) and sync.

Yeah, I have tried dropping it on the handheld via PalmOne Quick Install - didn't work. I am going to make sure that I have enough memory space on the handheld. I think I do, and I don't think that the file is too large (539Kb). But I am going to erase a few programs that I don't need anymore (like the Quick Tour) maybe that will open a little space up?

OK. I reinstalled FileZ. I also downloaded a test midi (just 41Kb) to the card and tried to use FileZ to move it to the handheld. FileZ wouldn't move or copy it either.

I can't drop it on the handheld using PalmOne Quick Install either.
