Default How Is My Memory Almost Full?

While I have uploaded a few programs to my handheld (Agendus + Vindigo), it appears that my memory is being used by programs that I cannot identify nor delete.

Can anyone recommend a program that identifies unused files or that can help clear some of my memory? I can't understand how I have less than 1MB of memory left and have only uploaded two programs (total is 4MB).

    Please help ...

    Thanks.

A good way to manage the files on your Treo for free is FileZ. A lot of people seem to like it. With it, you should be able to view the files on your Treo and identify anything that may be left over from trial apps you've since deleted, or anything else that you may not need there any longer. It will also enable you to move things to your card, if you have one.

For what it's worth, check out your email app. Do you have large emails (with attachments, possibly) in your inbox? They can eat up RAM. Also check your sent and deleted folders. Those will need to be purged periodically, as well. You'd be surprised how much RAM they can take up. A related item is messages, if you send a lot of SMS's. See if you can delete some conversations or at least the oldest messages in each thread.

I agree with the filez reccomendation. I've been using it for a while and it works great! Filez also gives you the ability to moves apps to an SD card (which is where most of my apps reside).

Thank you so much! I"ve installed the program and now am sorting through the files.

I've noticed that "MultiMail Attachments" is my largest file on my handheld, is this something that I could move to the SD card?

Furthermore, I noticed that some of the programs are copy protected, which can then be released in the "View and Edit Files". If I were to uncheck the "copy protect" box, would that allow me to move it to my SD card and have it function properly?

One last thing ... what is the difference b/w "saved" and "unsaved" files in the Preferences section? Do I need the unsaved files?

    THANK YOU!

I assume you're using VersaMail. That's whatever attachments you've downloaded to your inbox. VersaMail can't be run from the card and I'm pretty sure their attachments are stored in RAM, as well, so I believe you're out of luck there.

I'm not sure exactly which apps you're referring to, but many will run from the card, in the launcher file. Usually the copy protection is to prevent us from beaming shareware apps to our friends. Something many have done is to copy the app to the card, in the launcher folder, and then delete the app from RAM. I'm sorry my advice isn't dead on, but I don't use FileZ myself so I can't give you exact step by step directions.

Can't offer any help on this one. I'm not clear on the unsaved prefs, myself.

I'm trying to phase out of Versamail and replace it with Chatteremail. I was able to move this file (which was 16MB) to the card and everything on my handheld is working properly.

I've now solved my memory problem ... I have 16.6MB of free space vs. 1MB.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

I am a chatter email user myself and love the program, but I have heard wonderful things about Snapper! You might want to take advantage of both trials and see which is right for you . . .

Funny ... I started with Snappermail, then Agendus Mail and now Chatter. I didn't like the "look" of Snappermail ... Chatter suits me best ... I think it's the best one out there for my needs.

    Thanks though.

The difference between saved and unsaved preferences is whether or not they are backed up to the desktop in the case of a hard reset. Saved preferences have settings that you want to keep over time (configuration, high scores). Unsaved preferences are usually small files that are lost with a hard reset but are recreated on the fly as needed. Unsaved preferences for programs that are no longer used can eat up memory and should be cleaned up periodically. It is just good housekeeping.
