System Tools or Repair I can't get it to work!

Got a Cingular Treo 650 last night, put my old sim into it, and I can't get it to connect to the internet or get mail. It just keeps telling me "Unable to Establish PPP Connection." Even the web browser "Blazer" just sits there...I can choose "Connect" from the "Page" menu, but nothing happens. I've tried everything, and now I'm wondering if my sim is too old? Is that even possible?
It is as if my Treo doesn't have what it needs to get connected and I can't figure it out. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

How old is your SIM card? There has been an issue with older SIM cards with the Cingular Treo.

You can use the phone but not the data? Doesn't the Sim need to be flashed by Cingular to accept data transmission? If memory serves me correctly, mine had to be updated when I went from the Razor to the Treo.

When in doubt, call Cingular...1-800-801-1101

Music or Audio Thanks for listening.

Yeah, the phone part works fine. I haven't tried to hotsync and import data from a previous palm device because I will take the Treo back if I can't get it to work, but I can make and receive calls.
I'm interested in the comment about flashing my sim card, which could be as much as 3 years old? I will go back to my Cingular store this morning and see if this rings a bell with anyone there. I wonder if I can get a new sim card and still keep my phone number? I assume the contacts saved to the old sim will be lost, but that might be worth it if a new sim would fix my problem.
Thanks again for suggesting a solution...all technical service phone people have been unhelpful--Palm can't tell me about Cingular, Cingular can't help with the Palm OS, my ISP can't tell me what to do with Palm...blech!

Do you have a data plan on your service? If not, you're gonna get a PPP time out error. You should get an updated 64K SIM card from Cingular anyways as they perform better with the network and cell site connections. They won't change you # and can move your contacts from your old SIM to your new one while your there.

Yeah, that can be frustrating. Here's some Cingular support numbers that might help, too:

Voice Support: 1.866.246.4852
Palm Data Support: 1.866.490.2666

Here is a link to Cingular's web tutorial. Select the 650 from the list of devices and then select Browser/Internet. It will walk you thru your network connections.

Your SIM card is likely incompatible with the Treo. Is it 32k or 64k? The 32k Sim cards were done away with for the most part.

Yes, you can keep your phone number. They simply key in the new Sim Card to your account.

You don't have to loose your contacts on the Sim Card. Simply ask the Cingular Rep to transfer you contacts to your Treo's memory. If you don't want them in your main memory, you can simply transfer them to the new SIM card.

The Treo can be a pain at times but it's well worth the trouble. Don't give up.

Question Well, we may have it solved!

I went back to the Cingular store...the sales rep put her own (working) sim into my Treo and it wouldn't access the internet or get e-mail: must be the phone!! She went ahead and gave me another Treo AND a new sim, just in case.
I'm a Treo novice, so pardon the question: I was using the web browser to look at the Southwest Airlines web site and the display was pretty much unreadable...is it normal for a site with lots of graphics like that to be "too much" for the tiny Treo screen? I just want to be sure that there's not something wrong with Treo#2!
Thanks for the input and, more importantly, the support.

You can set the browser to "diable graphics". Some websites are poorly done (this includes desktop compatibility) and this could easily affect your experience on the Treo. I just loaded the Southwest site and agree. There are alot of fixed size tables that cause you to have to scroll right and left to use. I had images turned off and it was still tough to read. You'll find some sites are easier for the Treo to display.
