I'm taking a guess here.. Do you have your phone setup for a "Network Sync?"
From the hotsync screen on the phone, press the menu button and choose "LANSync Prefs". Make sure you are setup for local (if indeed that is what you are doing).

The Palm desktop has an option to require a password - the password is the device default password that was in effect at the time it was last sync'd. I hope that is still current...
