The great thing about the Treo is the data. It's up the wireless providers to provide customers with a fair plan. I was lucky enough to sign up for the Cingular Media Works plan and it's great. It's worth it's weight in gold for what I pay. I check email constantly and use the web for fast research or to check sports scores. If you are considering the Treo, then seriously consider a provider that gives you a good deal on data. I just returned from a business trip and I was able to check email on each leg of my trip -- in San Francisco, Seattle and when I landed in NY. With my Treo, I'm always in touch and never miss my "Online Pharmacy" Spam:D

Be cautious without data plan.
I have the 600 on Verizon, and don't have a data package. I had to double check and try and launch the Internet to verify, and it did as it should "unable to connect to the network".
Here is the part that upsets me. I callled my provider to double check on a feature on my wifes plan and the rep asked me if I was calling from my Treo. I told his yes, and asked why? He said "well I have added the data package to your account". I told him "wow, you mean for free?". Of course you all know the answer, NO! After 20 minutes of trying to get him to remove it he wouldn't budge, and he also told me I didn't need to speak to a supervisor. This was soo upsetting I hung up the phone and called a different rep who politely explained that they are told the Treo will not work without the data package. It is supposed to sync with their network every so often, but with the package disabled this isn't possible, and you don't get charged as well. I finally had to call the data 1-800 number for Verizon and they were kind enough to remove the data package.
Now I will be ever cautious when using my 600, because I was told if they activate it again without my consent I will have to pay the bill. Which my friend got hit with and it was $2,600 for 1 month. YIKES!

I purchased from a local Verizon Store!
Hello
I was forced to purchase the least expensive data package in order to place my order for a Treo 650. In the end I ended up about where I started I was forced to be on a Push to Talk Plan 800 Minutes for $79.99 a month even though I never used PTT it was because I wanted a particular phone that had PTT! So now I was able to get a standard Verizon Plan for 900 Minutes for $59.99 + the $24.99 Data Package. I also opted for the insurance.
It appears if I would have pressed them I could have got it without the Data (according to responses here).

You can try and call the data side of Verizon and see if they can help you out (866)788-9387. It turns out that many of Verizon employees have been forcing people to go with the data plan. The WDTS will help you out, they know more than the regular Verizon CS people.

They push it pretty hard, but will sell you the Treo without it if you insist. Before agreeing to a data plan (although I understand you don't intend to) be sure to try it out. I tried it at the store, and the speed was so slow as to make it virtually worthless for browsing. Might be ok for email, but for the web, pages would take several minutes to load. Completely worthless.

I agree the speeds are very low. That is one of the reasons that I chose not to get the plan. Just as anything else with Verizon they will automaticly sign you up and not tell you unless you ask. I didn't even buy my phone from them and they put me on a new 2 year contract when I activated the phone..
I had to spend another hour on the phone with them to prove that I didn't buy it at the store. For being the biggest network they sure have a messed up system. Hmmmm, unless they set it up that way to make more money and think that people won't notice or just give in.
