Question ISP connection from Noob

I have heard from a friend that it could be possible to use you home desktop ISP on your Treo. If anyone can give me some info on this it would be very helpful. I currently am paying $60 for wireless service and $50 on top of that for data. I need some info for the following:

1) If I can connect my Treo 650 using my computer ISP?

2) If so and I cancel my data plan, would I be charged for surfing & downloading on my treo from my wireless provider?

Any input would be appreciated

I've been using reverse bluetooth DUN on my treo. It works well. I used the guide at http://blog.treonauts.com/2005/07/tr..._wifi_l_1.html to initially set it up. If you have any questions feel free to ask. It does require that you have bluetooth set up on your pc, though.

Thanks HeroIgnored, I will try it.
I'm still curious if I was to go with this and cancel my data plan if it would cost me to use my treo to surf and download from the web?

I am not the brightest light on the Christmas tree but I do know if your not sure ask

Thanks For your help

You won't be charged for data transfered with your reverse bt dun connection as long as you don't have a fallback network connection specified. You can find that setting, if available with your carrier, under the Network part of your prefs, after pressing details at the bottom of the page: Prefs>network>details (Hope that wasn't too confusing >_<).

Pros and cons come with just using your at home connection. First con of all being that you can't use your internet functions anywhere but at home. The major pro, though, is that you drop that hefty data plan from your wireless bill.

Goodluck setting it all up. It's fun to play around with, if anything. The thing I like most about it is I can browse my favorite web pages while my computer is being used.

Thanks Heroignored! You have been a great help. If I can get it working, I will be more then happy to tell cellularone to shove the data plan. $50 a month just so I can surf the web and check email is rediculas! what makes it worse is text messeging is not included and I pay 10cents for each message in and out, that comes to an extra $10-15 a month.

Thanks Again

If I understand this right , you will only be able to surf or e-mail within 10 feet or so of your computer. So why use the treo at all?

That is the exact con of Reverse BT Dun. And, depending on your BT signal, you will be able to use the connection from anywhere between 2 meters to about 30 meters.

Here is why I like my reverse BT DUN:

1. I don't have to pay for an expensive data plan to access internet on my treo. This is only due to personal needs, because I really don't need to have data access while on the go, but at home I often download apps etc directly to my treo to avoid having to sync (hehe, laziness).

2. My computer is shared by my family. I don't mind this as much now because I can check my email and a few other things while I go about my business. And all this using my home internet connection no my treo.

3. It's really dang cool to be able to set this thing up. Just having the option available makes it easy to find its uses.

So, yeah, you're right. Not a whole lot that really makes it AMAZING. Just fun, really.

Yea what he ^ said

1 computer in a house of 3 kids is a pain. Why pay $50 for data plan or even buy another computer for the home when you can use your treo to check email or surf the net FREE. Plus the kids use the comp for homework and I don’t need to interrupt them especially when it's a pain to get them to start in the first place.
