| Memory Question Hello -
Well, I got my new (well, new to me) Treo 650 on Friday. It is all set up and I have loaded a few applications to help me get what I want on it. I do not plan on going nuts with it. I loaded up NVBackup, Avant Go, a Bible Reader, and MiniTones. All is well so far. I am syncing with both of my PCs (home and work) and so far I LOVE the device. Thank you to all who replied to my previous two posts in preperation for receiving my new Treo. Your help has been valuable and appreciated.
So, I think that I have loaded all that I "need" at this point. May "tinker" with a few other things. My Phone memory is reporting that I have 12.6 Meg of 20.6 Meg free. My question is, how careful do I need to be with this number? I am in the IT field, so I know the "value" of memory. How low can I take that and still expect the device to function properly?
Thanks again for all of your responses.

| Hi, congratulations on your new treo. I also just bought a second hand Treo 650 and love it. This community is invaluable. I am sure someone with more knowledge will answer the RAM question, but I just wanted to say that if you get an SD card you can store MOST of your apps on that and save the space on RAM. I have about 8 apps now that I added and only 2 I think are in RAM, the rest on the SD card. I use the minitones, great little program. I store the program itself on the SD card, even though the ringtones it creates must be stored in RAM.
Enjoy your phone

| Hi:
dollface (love that name) is correct in saying many apps can be stored on the card. Keep in mind that some apps must reside on the Treo in order to function properly. Watch what the program developers advise. A program like Avantgo is in memory, but the Avantgo data (which is the bigger memory hog) can be happily stored on the card.
You might consider looking at a program like ZLauncher which can help to control memory usage. A good back-up program is also highly recommended.
Search these boards and you will find some great information to help you.

| The 650's memory constraints are its down fall. More on that in a moment.
AvantGo = bloatware and of the readers available, it is the slowest. There are other applications that provide the same basic functionality, i.e., RSS feeds and have much, much smaller resource needs. One is QuickNews and there are bunches more.
MiniTones - nice, but these things have one thing in common - they use additional memory. One ring tone is not too bad, a second, not too bad, but when you add them up, it really impacts the device's free memory. In keeping with that, a SD based ring-tone management program takes care of that. Take a look at RingCare ( http://www.gotreosoftware.com/products/RingCare/), CallBlock ( http://wishsolutions.com/) and LightWav ( http://www.toysoft.ca/lightwav.html). Each of these are very well supported applications.
A good third party launcher will further enhance free memory. There are bunches. The ones to look at are ZLauncher ( www.zztechs.com), Initiate ( http://www.hobbyistsoftware.com/initiate-more.php) and LauncherX ( http://www.gotreosoftware.com/products/LauncherX/). There are bunches more. The advantage to a good third party launcher is the ability to move many applications to the card and launch them from the card. Most any application can live on the card unless it responds to alarms, has to do things automagically at a set time, interacts with another application, et cetera.

Ben | I am sorry to go off topic here, but may I ask if any of these ringtone managers that you all mention will also create a ringtone from an .mp3, like minitones does? That app will snip a section ANYWHERE in an .mp3 song and create the new .wav file and then export it to the ringtone folder for you. Just wondering, as that ability to create the ringtone anywhere in the tune is valuable to me, plus it's just fun.
Thank you

Thank you | I don't believe any of the ringtone managers that benjie or I mentioned will do that. The main advantage of the commercial ringtone apps is that they will let you store ringtones on your card. Personally, I use Audacity to edit my ringtones, which is a freeware PC mp3 editor.

| dollface...i believe the ringtone managers the guys have mentioned control the sounds on your treo from the card. so you would not need minitones

| Gotcha, thank you all. Kreth, I already have Audacity, great program. My husband is a musician and uses it quite frequently. Thanks for the suggestion.
