| Memory Space on my Treo I am really wondering what's going on with my memory in my 650. I don't think I have too much on it, but I've only got 1300k free. I'm not really sure what files are needed and what isn't. I will list my questionable files and their sizes as listed by Launcher X:

Why would AvantGo take up almost 4 megs in my memory when I have it saved to my 1GB card? I'm just using up 23.7 megs of my space and I don't know why...Here is my installed programs:
Docs-to-Go (only the Word and Excel programs)
AvantGo
GuitarPower (Free Trial)
Weight Watchers Prog (with DB)
Blazer
Calculator
World Clock
MyBible
Daily Reader
My Prayers (Free Trial)
Memorize!
Franklin Covey Plan Plus for Palm OS
Monopoly
Scrabble
Text Twist
Solitaire
Auto Off
Ringo Pro
Voice Dial
TCPMP with a couple codecs
Launcher X (Free Trial)
I know this is a LONG email...but I'm really looking for help in freeing up some of my space...just-in-case. I keep all of my photos, movies and mp3 ringtones on my SD card. I also have AvantGo set to save all of the websites to the SD card. I'm just at a loss. Thanks for your time and looking this over and for any suggestions you my have!!! |

| You need to make use of your third party launcher - move everything to the SD card that you can, which is basically everything that does not respond to an alarm or run in the background. If you have an email program that runs on a schedule or ChatterEmail, it has to be in main memory. If you use an alarm clock program such as MobileClock, it has to be in main memory, et cetera.
Programs like Documents to Go can be on the SD card. Avantgo probably in main memory for most of it because of its size.
Using ZLauncher on my Sprint Treo 650, I went from 4mb to 10-12 with normally 11 or so free. On my Treo 700p I have about 40mb or so free.

| Hi:
I can tell you that on my 650 I have the AvantGo program on the device, but the data files are stored on my card. The program appears to take up about 1mb on the device, but the data uses over 3mb on the card. Of course that depends on how many subscriptions you have.
Storing the daily data on a card is an option when setting up the AvantGo program, but it can also be changed later. I didn't have a card when I first loaded AvantGo, but I moved the location for the daily downloads after I obtained a card and realized how much memory I was using. I have been using AvantGo for more than five years and I would miss it at airports, etc.
The instructions on changing to a card for data storage were on the Avantgo site and they were pretty straight forward as I was able to do it without incident. I have a bit of computer ability, but not that deep.
I hope this helps,

| A note about ZLauncher. If you can, move everything that does not need to be in main memory to the card. Things that run in the back ground or work with alarms/preset timed events need to be in main memory. Anyway...
If it is an application that only has itself and and does not need to be in main memory, move it to /Palm/Launcher ---- the reason for this is that applications on the SD card in the /Palm/Launcher folder are not read by the standard launcher at start up time. If you move it to a ZLauncher application folder, then a short cut is created in main memory and that means another application the operating system has to index. Too many indexes will seriously slow bootup time down, though most of us do not have that many.
If you use Datebook 5/6, the maintenance utilities can be placed on the SD card, /Palm/Launcher - they do not need to be in main memory - they will launch and run properly from the SD card.
Applications that create multiple files, well those can be moved to the ZLauncher applications folder. If you have an application that utilizes multiple creator IDs, ZLauncher can handle all of those. In fact, they do not have to be even related at all! For instance, you can place the Java files in the same ZLauncher applications folder as KMaps and it'll move everything to main memory, launch them and upon termination of KMaps, move everything back to the ZLauncher applications folder. This has the capability of saving you LOTS of memory. The pay off though means that a longer launch time may be involved. Important? Maybe, maybe not.
Take a bit of time to think how you want to use the speed launch feature. Works very well.
If you have a really large application, you can be sure it will take a bit longer to launch. For instance, Avantgo takes longer to launcher. I have Documents to Go installed. The main app is in main memory and everything else is on the SD card.
There are so many things this application does - read the documentation - it will help you a lot.
Anyway, on my Sprint Treo 650, I started around 4-5 mb when I started looking for a good launcher. After using ZLauncher, I was able to get between 10-12mb free and normally kept it around 11.1mb free. On my Sprint Treo 700p I have 40mb free.
With a bit of time, there is no reason you cannot claim another meg or so of memory.

| space for the beginner from a slightly simpler point of view the main thing i have done to keep space low is move all multi media ( apart from wallpapers), sounds, video over to my card. dataviz tech tool is free and exceptionally useful for moving only the appropriate bits of documents2go onto a card. it is highly useful to move all documents and large database files over there too.
i'm no uber geek but without trying too hard i've got 13.5 mb free on my 650!

| Not a bad amount. My Treo 650 - 10-12, normally around 11 or so. Thirteen megs is a number proud to have. I have become a big fan of Documents To Go. Meeting notes, informational spread sheets, et cetera - all are now kept with Documents To Go. A simple third party launcher with the ability to copy from SD to main memory, launch and then back at termination may get you a bit more memory. Ben

| Damn guys that was one informative thread! FF I'm no uber geek either, thanks for that simple version. Ben, thanks for the schoolin!
Question, so if I have zlauncher or the sort, I can move everything over to my card? Next, does the launcher make everything more accessible? Thanks ahead of time guys, I'm headed over to research zlauncher and others..

| After taking these guys' advice, I've been using ZLauncher and am going to buy it! It has REALLY freed up my memory. I now have aroun 8 MB of memory on my device now. If you have a 1-2 GB card...you are MORE than good to go. I've got a lot of my programs on my card with a movie and some pictures (the movie is iRobot, 2 hrs.) and I've STILL got 180 mb left on my 1 gb card! ZLauncher rocks...and everything works GREAT! |

| You can move most anything to the card that does not run "automagically." Automagically means anything that responds to alarms, such as an alarm clock, a timing application, something that runs in the background on a schedule, gets email automagically, stays on line all the time, those apps just gotta stay in main memory, just gotta.
Anything that is really big probably would benefit from staying in main memory due to launch time. For instance, Avantgo - it can all be moved to the card; however, launch time would put you into retirement age. With Avantgo, put it in main memory and the databases on the card. DTG - move it all with its built-in file manager.
2Day - it'll move, but I found a reset problem with it, due to its interaction with bunches of things.
Launchers go a long way toward saving memory and ZLauncher and those like it that handle multiple Creator IDs go even further. I purchased ZLauncher on day 2 of its use back when I was using the Treo 650. Ben
