Some people have luck by plugging and unplugging the headset plug and bunch of times and sometimes it will release a microswitch that is sticking. A true quality design. However, I do believe this is temporary and fails again and again.
There used to be a couple of videos out there that provided instruction from A to Z. You might take a look around YouTube or Google it.

Thanks Steve. The videos are very good. I think I'll look for a new mic first. That sounds like the least expensive. However, I have the wife thinking a new (better) model is the way to go so I should probably do that before she changes her mind. I just have a genetic aversion to throwing anything away if it can be fixed. Rats! Anyway, thanks again. I'll let everyone know what happens. You all have been great.

Alll you need is a torx T5 screwdriver.

Check the links mentioned above by stevetaz on how to remove the back plastic. Then you have to loosen the flat cable that connects the keyboard. Lift up the brown locking lever that is just a little wider than the cable and pry the cable out. Now you can lift the first circuit board up to the side. You don't have to disconnect the next flat cable to access the mic if remember correctly. That one is much harder to get back in place again I learned the hard way some time back. Good luck.

Wow, thanks Stevetaz, it really did the job. After making a new tip for my soldering pen it was a breeze. Mind you, I had to ware two glases, both my own and the ladys reading glasses to get enuf magnification. After some multimeter probing I did the signal2 to signal2 connection and damn, it it's like new. Took the opportunity to adjust the ground connector too so now it sits better in the jack. One thing remains though. It's the loud static when connecting the earphones. Really bad if the ear pieces are are already in. But it has been like this since the beginning and only if the sound circuit is activated. It turns itself of after only a few seconds of no sound feed (to conserve battery I guess) and then you don't get the bad noise.
Thanks again.
PS. I think I'll get the Centro anyway. Got some positive indications from a colleague today. DS.

Hi niltomek:
Glad it worked for you and obviously you are a bit handier than most!
I have also heard good things about the Centro and if you search around these boards for comments by uber-user benjie about the Centro you will find he seems to be a big supporter and has adapted really well.
Good luck!

Placed the order
New Centro comin' in. Ordered it this afternoon (CET). As always it took weeks to decide and now I'm sore about that it's gonna take a few days to get it. But I'll have the old 650 back in operation 'till it comes. It managed it's first day back in duty any way.
Now all I have to do is to find someone at work who's willing to take the SE P1i that I was givin' a chance off my hands and pay for it.
I think someone that never used a PalmOS device would find that phone rather nice. The form factor and specs are really good and as long as you think that the Symbian-UIQ OS&apps make it as good as it can get you'd be quite satisfied.

Thanks again! I have the T5 driver and replacement mic so I'm ready to give it the old college try. I hoped to do it this weekend but came down with the flu. Better now so I feel comfortable trying it. I will post the results.
