Microphone not Working
Hello everyone. I dropped my 650 a while ago. The keypad stopped working so the phone didn't work either. I got the keypad fixed only to discover the microphone isn't working. I can plug in a wired headset and the phone works fine. I have been reading about the headset jack issues but at this point don't know if I have a jack issue or if the impact just destroyed the mic. I am capable of the dissambly and soldering to do the jack repair (I think). However, I don't want to do that if the issue is the mic itself. Can anyone give me an educated guess or maybe a test that would isolate the problem? Thanks! I have learned a lot from the site already. It's a great resource.:gasp:

Have you used bluetooth? Does the wired headset work? You can search here for the answer but it is probably going to be a contact/switch in the jack on the phone. Some here have giggled or twisted the headphone jack in the treo and got the contact to release. Treo has a weak jack.

Just trying to learn and talk at the same time here.

Thanks for the reply. I have not used Bluetooth. I tried a wired headset and it works fine but it has it's own microphone so I still can't tell if I have a jack issue or a broken mic. It sounds like jack issues are pretty common. I was just concerned about the mic itself becaus it seems like it would have to be pretty sensitive to work as well as it did......before the floor surfing.

Hi:
Not sure, but back in the old days when I had this trouble I was able to tell by:
-Make a call you know won't be answered or maybe your voicemail.
-On the screen, does the speakerphone option appear?
-If it is not an option, the jack may be the culprit. The phone "thinks" that a headset is plugged in so speakerphone is not an option.
-If the speakerphone option is there, you may have a different problem.
I hope this helps,

Microphone not working
Thanks Steve. I do get the speakerphone option. It makes sense that "speakerphone" would not be presented if the headset jack was the issue. It sounds like I may have destroyed the microphone. I will just have to decide whether to get it repaired or go ahead an upgrade to a later version. Other than the recent reaction to gravity, I have been very pleased with it. Thanks again for the info.

Yes, that pesky gravity sure can have negative effects.
Sorry you broke your toy, but I bet you get a better one.....

I've dropped my 650 sooo many times on the floor. Recently it dove head first right on the antenna and now I have the 'headset always connected' syndrome. It works fine even with my regular, no mic, senheiser headphones.
Fixed it a couple of time by disassembling the whole unit, scratching and poking around the jack removing some oxide and so, but now it really thinks it's always got a headset connected. Some soldering point must be bad. It's right on the circuit board so it seems hard to make a cheap repair. Any one know of an easy repair?
BTW, the mic is really easy to replace if you can get hold of one. It's not soldered, just recessed into the plastic and has two little golden things that connect to the main board.

Hi:
You could first try this if you were interested in pricing a repair. Note that I only know him by reputation. He still is maintaing a 100% positive feedback, which ain't bad! If not, here is a novel self-repair approach.
Some people have luck by plugging and unplugging the headset plug and bunch of times and sometimes it will release a microswitch that is sticking. A true quality design. However, I do believe this is temporary and fails again and again.
There used to be a couple of videos out there that provided instruction from A to Z. You might take a look around YouTube or Google it.
Let us know how you make out...

Or you could try this solution for cheap and get it here at ET!!!
Everybody wins! Wait, what do I get?
Hmmmmmmmm.
Note that you will not have access to the Treo data connector when using this.

Niltomek: Thanks for the input. I think I'll see if I can locate a mic. I am pretty sure I can replace it. If not I bet I can break it even worse. No, seriously, thanks for the info. Good luck with yours!
