If you want to use your mp3's without spending money on a 3rd-party app, it can be done.
Download the free
Wavepad, which will let you edit your mp3's. You'll need to crop your song to roughly 30 seconds. Pick your own start and end point within the song. Save it as a .wav file, deciding what quality you can live with as a ringtone. Remember, this will be a fairly large file. Depending on the quality you save as, anywhere from say 500kb to 1.5mb. So go with the minimum quality you can live with, as the Treo's memory is at a premium. Now I tried several ways to get this file on the Treo and finally ended up mailing it to myself, like others have done, downloading the file from within my mail app on the Treo and saving to the device. It automatically gets recognized and added to the "Tones" library and you can select it from withiin the "Tones" part of "Prefs".
Or you can visit 3gforfree from the Treo's browser. They have Sprint-specific (.qcp) ringtones.

I actually just started using pictures yesterday but I only get them on incoming calls, too.
