Post Need Advice: Want to purchase Treo 650, but...

Hi All,

I am ready and want to purchase the Treo 650 with Cingular, as that is my current wireless provider.

I was told by the sales person at the Cingular store yesterday, that they would not recommend the Treo 650 because of all the issues that have been discussed in these and other forums, with regard to the phone crashing, buggy software, etc.

I don't want to have to get 2 different devices. I would love to carry only one device.

A couple of questions:

1. Have the bugs with the SIM cards with Cingular and the buggy software issues been eradicated?

2. How is the quality of the phone on the Treo 650? Is it on par with other phones, such as say Motorola's Razor? Or is there a compromise because it is 2 devices in one?

The Cingular salesman said I should get 2 devices, the Razor, because he says it is the best phone on the market and a Blackberry to handle my email needs. I didn't get the feeling that he was trying to sell me 2 products to make a higher commission. He sounded honest and sincere. But hey, I could be wrong.

Any guidance and suggestions would be appreciated.

Kindest,
Chris

A good salesman will always try to sell you two $300 phones and say its necessary.

Ill answer according to my friends opinions. He has a razor and treo 650 with cingular. He does not use them at the same time, but swaps them back and forth.

His Razr (Form over Function): Great phone, but just a phone. The design is the main selling point more than anything. Quality, but you pay to have the modern design.

His Treo 650 (Function and Form): Great phone. He has never had any problems with it. Always ends up using it more than the razr. It has far more functions that are useful in his daily activities. No bugs that I have ever heard of.

I love mine. I wasn't thrilled with the size to start, but it grows on you.

Hey there Chris,

Ultimately, the choice is yours of course, but I'll respond with some of my thoughts on the subject.

I'd have to take a step back and first say that the Treo is like a computer. What I mean is the stability of the computer is related to what you do with it, and what software/hardware you use with it.
I learned this the hard way when I got my Treo a few weeks ago.
I bet I had 30+ apps on there, all kinds of stuff, and well over half of it was crappy low-grade low-quality programming type applications.
Thus, my Treo was buggy/etc and I didn't like it.

Now, after I updated my ROM to 1.17 and only installed 1 or 2 stable applications, I've had -zero- problems. It's been rock solid.

Same with a computer...look at any computer that has a bunch of crap installed on it and of course it'll be slow and buggy b/c of the software that's on it.

I'll also add in that you rarely hear about those that are happy with [insert item here.] 90%+ of your comments/feedback is from those that have a problem. I try to keep that in mind when looking to purchase anything.

(Wow, that was a long reply, lol! )

All I'll say is he/she is a Cingular Salesman. I'll leave it at that.

As for the quality, I think it's top notch. The keys are well made, evenly spaced. The outer case/shell has an even finish, the screen is crystal clear and the device feels solid over-all.

However, these are simply my opinions, please take them as such.
Best of luck on whatever you choose!

Default Happy even with minor issues

Chris,

I use a lot of Palm devices. I am constantly installing and uninstalling software depending on what type of training I do. I have only had one real problem with my Treo and it is related to the Cingular update 1.17. The bloody thing lights up every minute or so. not a big issue, just annoying.
As far as stability, yeah it's a computer. from time to time things will happen. Phone wise, same quality as my old T616 and my wife's current Sony S710.
Oh yeah, should you purchase the Treo, don't let any cingular salesperson talk you into the PDA data plans. We have disussed them at length on this forum. Get Media Net unlimited. You will be much happier and can afford to super size your value meal at McDonalds. lol.

Thank you all for your earnest feedback. I really appreciate it. I will go out and get my Treo and make sure I don't overload it with unnecessary apps.

Kindest,
Chris
