    Default new to forums

i just bought 2 new unlocked cingular branded treos (one for me and the other for my wife)

i've been reading about these phones and i like what i see. we currently use at&t gophones and wanted to upgrade to something that has a little more versatility to them.

i know i am able to swap out the sim cards from the gophone to the 650. however what i do not know is, does this limit some of the applications i can use? i assume the phone and text will act like usual, but what about the web access? i do not have a data plan.

i am glad there are forums like these that have answered a lot of my questions already (i've been lurking for a few days...)

what issues should i be on the look out for? does anyone else use the at&t gophone option? any recommendations?

Web access requires a data plan. I take it these phones are used? If you still have an option to return them, I would do so, as the 650 has issues upon issues for many people. The Centro would be a better alternative.

nothing about on the site said anything about used/refurbed phones

from these forums, it looks like there are issues, however a fix is just a search away.

Not necessarily. The 650 has issues that Palm never addressed. Lots of effort will make it less prone to reset; however, of all of the Palm OS Treos ever born, the 650 was the real trouble child. If you are in the position to return them for the Centro series, that would be to your advantage.

........ and just to post on the opposite end, I am not down playing the known issues with the treo 650, but I bought my treo 650 on ebay 2 years ago, after that person used it for 2 years and now my husband has been using it for almost a year since I upgraded. We have not had any issues with it, no resets and he goes on the internet with it, checks mail, has the weather auto updated, and plays endless hours of games on it. So I guess it's a crap shoot but there are some good units out there. Enjoy your new phones. :laugh3:

I would have thought the 700P took that title...

Your phones should be ok...I think what Ben is saying is your buying old tech. when the newer and maybe just as cheap treo out there. I never had problems with my 650 (that was not third party software) but wanted the newer 755p which is much faster on the internet. The 650 is not capable of the faster network speeds and has limited memory. But it will make a good starter phone for you. I hope you did not pay too much for them.

Anyway to your question get on a data plan if you are going to surf at all with your phone. Data can be real expensive. Talking and texting are not data but if you attach a pic to a text or send an email that is data.

ok, thanks. the phones were only $150 each. i'm liking what i see so far.

i see the 3 plan options for my gophone 1mb, 5mb and unlimited. how do i tell how much i would need? i don't want to waste money on an unlimited plan if i'm only using 4mb a month...

I do not know the prices or your habits on searching the net... Most carriers will let you change plans without a penalty these days. Data can add up pretty quickly if you are sending or receiving pics or music. One music wave file (mp3's are smaller) can be a couple of mgs.

well I just have my email program check for mail every 10 minutes and I have my weather program update itself every 3 hours and I sometimes listen to internet radio, maybe 2-3 times a week and I can use over 1GB of data a month. I'd go for the unlimited.
