| New to Treo and any PDA to be exact and im feeling a bit overwhelmed. I was reading the apps page and now I feel even more lost. Most the time people just named something, but didnt say what it did or how to get it.
Are these things free? Is their like a newbie page on here I can read over? Any advice for a new guy, loving the phone thus far, but wow, their is alot going on
EDIT- ok I did search and find something that was useful, but still searching around for a thread that breaks down what is out their, how to get it and what it does.....ill keep looking, but any help would be great
thanks!
EDIT #2- more I look, im learning, but I am very illiterate when it comes to these things, still not sure what zlauncher is, why would I want to get rid of blazer?, why do I need a program to add/delete apps (doesnt it already have one on their), I need something that is written out so easy that a monkey could do it :D
thanks again!

| Welcome to the EverythingTreo Forum ECS! It can be a little overwhelming can't it? Believe me, I have been using Palm devices for years, and I still have questions! I would recommend that you start in the Everything Treo KnowledgeBase. This is just a great place for someone new to the Treo to get started! As far as apps for the Treo go, some are free, others cost money. All those offer trials! If you think there is something you would like for your Treo, you can usually download it at the ET Software store and if you like it, you can purchase it. zLauncher is an app to organize your Treo. It might not be for you, but many like it. But my advice would be to install two things FIRST on your Treo. A back up program, and an application, to uninstall apps. What happens is many times, you will add an application to your Treo, and decide it isn't for you. When you go to delete that program, it won't totally delete. There may be databases and files associated with it. A good uninstaller will find those associated files and delete them all. Also, a popular app is filez. This is an application to help you move/delete files on your Treo. Finally, I think you will find lots of friendly people on this forum, who are more than willing to help you out! Oftentimes, when trouble starts, you might think its a personal problem, but a quick post here usually proves that what just might have happened to you, has happened to several already! Again, welcome in to ET!

| Thanks still rockin, im gonna check that stuff out. I do have 2 quick basic questions....
To actually install any app, am I correct in thinking I just DL it, it sets up on my desktop, then I drop it into quick install?
Also, as far as a SD card, I know it holds memory, but like what? Like would it hold games, ect??? |

SD cards can hold Treo applications, music files, documents, movies, etc. Anything you can store on your computer, you can store on the SD card. Of course, you might need the right Palm app to access it. Because the 650 isn't exactly blessed with lots and lots of memory, many people use applications such as filez and zLauncher to launch applications from the card. Setting up apps like this saves that precious memory on the Treo . .

The SD was $80 with 2-twenty dollar rebates! I don't know if that was a special sale or not, but that was a deal that made me a very happy guy! So much in fact, that I bought another digital camera before I got out of there!!!!
You can download zlauncher here: http://www.zztechs.com

| I would get a 1 gig card or a two gig. (two is as big as it gets) Do a search on the web for filez and it is free.
The treo can do so much stuff it can be confusing. Once you learn that the phone button puts you in phone mode and that the home button will run you through all the apps things will come togeter.
Check around or lurk here on the board and you will see what others are using. I have a few games and a couple of books on mine. Others have everything on theirs.

Also, I didnt want to start a new thread, but I do have a question. I have a sirius satilite account, can I run that on my treo?
EDIT- nevermind about the sirius, found something and didnt understand one word, ill just give up on that for now.
I do have a question about the free apps, being a poor teacher, I have found some free Backup (NVbackup) and uninstallers, just not sure if they are what I want or if they will hurt me in some way. Any suggestions?

However, for now, I would recommend that you download filez directly to your Treo. Get used to moving files back and forth between the card and your Treo. zLauncher makes this a little easier, by automatically creating a shortcut on your palm. Quote:

Any suggestions? | There are many "free" solutions out there. Some of them may not be as feature rich as "not free" but they work just fine. Directory assistant is one of my favorite applications for the Palm Treo and its free! I have tried a fee free back up programs. In fact, once had to restore my Treo with a free back up program, and it worked just fine! What the free back up didn't offer was to back up automatically and to create restore points. It was also very slow to back up. To tell it to back up usually meant 10-12 minutes of down time while it did its thing. After I had to use it to restore, I realized the importance of have restore points and that I could tell it to back up every day at a certain time, so I would almost always have a fresh back up! I live on a tight budget myself, (daughter who can't drive in college) but suddenly that looked like a $15.00 that might be well spent . . . filez has been proven to work just fine. If anything, its programs such as back ups, file managers, and uninstallers that help you when you download programs that "hurt you" in some way . . . Also, if you have problems, you can hard reset, remove the offending application from your computer's back up folder and reinstall everything.
I was given this advice and didn't listen, but now I will offer the same: Once you have a back up and a file manager on your Treo, go slow on other installs. Downloading 3-4 apps at a time on your Treo won't tell you what the offending app is when you have problems.
