new to treo, acouple questions

I just scored a Treo 650 for cheap on Ebay so i'm new to the device and have acouple questions.

1) National Access/Blazer - I accessed this and started browsing around on the internet getting a feel for it on the Treo before realizing that this probably wasn't free. I know this may vary carrier to carrier but I use Verizon and don't have any additional data plan or anything. Just my normal calling plan. Does that mean i'm probably going to get charged some amount of money for the few minutes I had accessed the internet?

2) Google Maps/Similar Apps - I wanted to download the Google Maps application, along with other internet based apps, but does this also mean I would need some kind of data plan to not pay as I use it, like Blazer, assuming that's not free.

More or less, I just want to know about connecting to the internet via my treo using different applications, and if i'm going to get a bill with some crazy amount for using Blazer for a few minutes.

Basically, if you want to do anything besides voice, you need a data plan. Paying as you go for data can get expensive in a hurry.
