New Treo 650 locks up when charged

I just purchased a new Treo 650 from eBay. Cingular branded and locked. Came shrink wrapped in a Palm box with sync cable, software disk, and AC charger. When I plug the AC charger into the Treo the Treo locks up. It does charge, but every morning I have to pull the battery to get it running. It seems to only lock up after the screen goes blank. After the screen times out and goes blank nothing will wake it up other than pulling the battery.

I guess I'm going to return it if there isn't a quick fix.

Hi and welcome to ET:

New can be a relative term, especially on eBay. If it is a reputable seller you really should excercise the seller's warranty and obtain a fully functional unit. Was it sold as a 100% brand new-in-the-box unit and not a refurb?

There are many issues that can occur and you could fill up a full day or two trying to diagnose the problem, let alone resolve it.

If you will not be able to get a functional replacement, we will be happy to try to help, but this is not a good way to start out your Treo experience...

That, of course, is just my opinion. If you want to spend some time trying to solve it we can, but be aware that it could turn out to be a hardware issue that might require replacement anyway.

The one thing I would suggest you try is to do a Hard Reset if it is new and you haven't loaded anything yet. Note that this will wipe any data out you might have input so you might want to do a hot sync to save any data such as contacts before doing the Hard Reset.

Here is a link to descriptions of the various resets and instructions. You should look at the Hard Reset or possibly the Zero-Out reset (only for the 650), but the Zero-Out reset is very difficult to get right if you only have two hands.

I hope you get it resolved as the Treo can be a real fun and valuable tool.

I'm trying to get another one now, so we will see how that goes. I think I just got a hardware defective unit.

It came shrinkwrapped in a Palm box, looked like new, was advertised as 100% new, came from Renew Electronics.

I have tried a hard reset and a zero-out reset. There is nothing in the system log. But it still locks up when I plug the AC adapter in to charge the battery, and it always requires the battery to be pulled, reset button does nothing when it locks up.

Renew Electronics exchanged my Treo for another one and this one works. There must have been a hardware problem with the other one.

I am glad the vendor did the right thing and you were able to get a functioning unit.

And now the fun begins.....
