    Hello altautah,

This is Kevin from Palm. Congratulations on your new Treo.
The first thing I would suggest is to please read the manual. That's the mantra on forums, read the manual, read the manual...
If possible, use your Treo for a few days without third-party software installed, to familiarize yourself with it's basic features/functions.
Have a plan for how to keep your data backed up, either by hotsyncing on a very regular basis or installing back up software.
When you're ready to start installing third party applications, be sure they list your Treo as compatible. Consider installing some uninstall/software management software. Then, install apps one at a time, preferably allowing a day or two between installations in order to be sure that the software is running smoothly and there are no conflicts with other functions of the device. Avoid installing numerous applications at the same time.

The Palm site can be a good resource. Check its main Support pages for the latest updates, tips, tricks and the Knowledge Library.
Last, but not least, bookmark EverythingTreo, it is also a great resource, lots of experienced folks here willing to help. I'm sure they'll add to these suggestions in more detail.

    Enjoy!
    Kevin

Number one...install the software that comes with your Treo and achieve communication between your desktop and the Treo.

I wouldn't try to do "too much"...too soon. Get acquainted with the software on your new Treo and then start to experiment with other apps. There are some great threads here on pretty much every topic. From adding movies, to customizing ringtones to configuring your email account. I'd check out this article on "Is there any good free software for the Treo" or this article on "Can I Instant Message my friends with a Treo"

There are all kinds of topics here in the forums, in our knowledgebase. Have fun, enjoy it.. remember to HotSync daily. If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask. We've all had our Day 1 Treo experience...excitement followed by

    and welcome to Everything Treo!

i think the joy of most bits of technology is that it IS fun to discover on your own, that even if you do muck around it is virtually impossible to actually kill the thing and virtually all errors are recoverable.

come on, hands up all those that read the manual, cover to cover before playing??

(PS we all KNOW we should read the manual and of course most of the answers to most of the questions asked (might be) in the manual but hey, NOT reading the manual and discovering stuff is FUN!)

Ha! Well, good point, but live by the sword, die by the sword :

    Customer: "My computer crashed!"
    Tech Support: "It crashed?"
Customer: "Yeah, it won't let me play my game."
Tech Support: "All right, hit Control-Alt-Delete to reboot."
Customer: "No, it didn't crash-it crashed."
    Tech Support: ""
Customer: "I crashed my game. That's what I said before. I crashed my spaceship and now it doesn't work."
Tech Support: "Click on 'File,' then 'New Game.'"
Customer: [pause] "Wow! How'd you learn how to do that?"
