I think your problem is exactly what you touched on: no data plan. It sounds like what's happening is your Treo is connecting to Cingular's Data Connect service, which tells it that you don't have a valid login/password, and bumps you.
I'm a Verizon Wireless customer, but Cingular is no different in this respect. Voice services (telephony, voicemail), data services (internet, e-mail), and paging services (MMS/SMS/text) are treated as separate package services & billed separately. To add the ability to go online from your Treo you'll have to buy a data plan; rates are on
this page (at the bottom).

P.S. By the way, for your own protection,
never post any login ID or password in a BB post or online. As least, may start getting spam from web bots that scour these forums for such things. At worst, malicious people (not us!) will start using them!
