Default newbie - hard reset of Treo 650

    Hi,

    Just newly registered.

Bought a used unlocked GSM Treo 650 from Ebay.

Have been a longtime Palm user so I thought might as well have my data and phone in only one device instead of carying around two.

However, my Treo keeps cutting my calls and from time to time resets itself. Because of this, I was forced to transfer my SIM card to an older GSM phone and just use my Treo for data.

I read from another thread here in this forum that programs from older Palm versions might be the culprit. I suspect this is true in my case becsue I had a Sony Clie from which I just hotsynced the data from my Desktop into my Treo.

    My question is :

    1. How do I do a HARD RESET on my Treo 650 so that I erase all the programs and data I loaded and start afresh?

    2. Even I f I do a HARD RESET, if I then try to load back my data from my Palm Desktop, won't that just load back the other programs and/or data that causes havoc on my Treo? How do I avoid this? I don't want to enter all the data on my Address Book/Calendar and Memos one by one. That's a huge amount of work.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks,

Hello and welcome to the forums. I also had older models of Palms (just PDA's) that I had synced with Palm Desktop. When I got my Treo 650, I just synced it with my current Palm Desktop and I got error messages about several programs not being compatible with the 650. What I ended up doing was doing a hard re-set of the 650, uninstalling my current Palm Desktop Software and re-installing the Palm Desktop that came on the CD with the 650. I chose to synce my calendar to Outlook on my computer since I daily maintain that calendar. Then I did my first hotsync to the newly installed Palm Desktop. Some software is definitely not compatible with older Palm PDA's and the Palm Treo's. You may just have to pick and choose what you want to put on the new Treo or may have to buy new software. What I highly suggest you do buy is a software manager for the Treo, I use Uninstall and it is great. It will monitor any software you install and you can choose to try it out to see if it causes any problems and if so, with one button press, completely uninstall the program and all related databases.

I think you will love the 650 once you get it rolling, but the older Palm PDA softwares, some may not play well with the 650. Good luck! :laugh3:

Oh, here is the instructions on how to do a hard reset, just scroll down to 650:

    Hi dollface,

thanks a lot for the tip.

I don't have all my info on Outlook (guess I now have to) because I find the Palm Desktop much easier to use.

If I do a hard reset and then uninstall my old Palm Desktop and reinstall with the newer version, I'm afraid I lose all my data and have to re-enter them again one by one (I can print hardcopies before I uninstall and install).

But I guess with my situation there is no other way, otherwise I will be hotsyncing with all the problems again.

By the way, where can I find the Software Manager for Treo 650? Do I have to buy it?

    Thanks again.

A lot of people use the Palm Desktop for their calendar and contacts, so if you like it use it.

The problem as I see it, is that you are trying to hotsync a treo 650 with the Palm Desktop for which you have synced older Palms, you mentioned you had synced a Clie with the Desktop software. What you can do is set up your Hotsync program to only sync your calendar and contacts, choose Do Nothing for everything else. This is found on the toolbar of the Palm Desktop under Hotsync, Customize. A screen will open that shows all the things that get synced, just click change on each one and choose Do Nothing, except for Calendar and Contacts.

Now do the hard reset on the treo 650 and you can then hotsync it to the palm desktop and only the calendar and contacts will sync. after that is when you should uninstall that old palm desktop and install the new one for the treo 650. Hotsync your phone with it and it will upload all the calendar and contacts.

there is really no way around losing programs that you used on a Clie as they may not be compatible with a treo. As far as the software manager I mentioned, "Uninstall", yes you must buy it but it is excellent.

You set up outlook and palm desktop basically the same. You go into palm desktop to setup what you sync with either program. If your stuff is in palm no problem but if you need help with outlook just ask.

Palm software can be downloaded at palm.com Palm desktop is free.

    Default backup, resetting and installing/uninstalling

    thanks, plunker,

Since I bought my unit from Ebay, I only had the unit and cable. I didn't have the original installation CD, thinking that it would work without any problem with my current desktop. I think this is where the problem started.

I have since bought an original installation CD and waiting for it to arrive. Once it comes, I will do the following :

    1. backup my Treo with my exisiting Palm desktop.
    2. do a hard reset on the Treo to clear it of 3rd party applications.
    3. go into my PC and rename the backup folder to backup.old so that it won't reinstall the 3rd party applications when I sync it.
    4. sync my "clean" Treo so that the contact, calendar, and memos are loaded back on.
    5. uninstall my Palm desktop (because it came config'd with Sony Clie).
    6. install the new desktop with the original installation CD of the Treo 650.
    7. sync with the Treo so that the info can be loaded into the new desktop.

Can you guys telll me if the above steps would work? In uninstalling the old Palm/Clie desktop, are there any files and/or directories I should look out for and delete before doing the installation of the new one?

Thanks again for all the help.

They should work... but I would get a backup program that will backup to your pc and save your 3rd party apps. I have backup buddy and it backs up to my card. If you are not going with a back up program I would do one and two now and see if you have fixed your problem.

It dawned on me that when I also did a hotsync to my already installed Palm Desktop, with which I had synced other Palms (Z22) with; I got error messages after the initial hotsync saying that some of the apps were not compatible and may not work. In my Palm folder under Programs, I found a folder that is titled "PalmOS5 Incompatible Apps"; inside were the apps that were on the Z22 that might not work on the Treo 650. Look and be sure that you don't have that folder and you can then move it out of your Palm folder so it doesn't sync again.
