Newbie questions about Treo, Goodlink
Hello folks. New to the forum and new to Treo.
I did a search and found that there doesn't seem to be a lot of Goodlink users here, and the reviews seem mixed. My company uses Goodlink, so I don't really have a choice, but wanted to see what types of problems (if any) you guys have experienced.
I would prefer to keep my personal contacts seperate from my Goodlink contacts, but it seems that some have said this is not possible... meaning, one has to be the default and it seems it might disable some of the functions of the other. Can anyone confirm this? Or, if there is a workaround, let me know what it is?
Also, Missing Link seems to be the popular choice for synchronization. Question is, how will that be affected if the software running on the Treo is Goodlink instead of Palm OS? What I'd like to do is sync my personal contacts either with Entourage or Apple's Address Book (Yes, Mac user here!) and have the Goodlink contacts sync with the server however it does it. Am I going to be disappointed and find out that this can't be done?
BTW, I'm expecting my 650 in the next few days, so I haven't even had a chance to play with it yet. Just doing my research now ;)

bump ;)
I figured with the limited responses on previous Goodlink threads there wouldn't be much activity on this one either, but it was worth a shot.
please help if you have any insight!
thanks.

Hi-
Welcome to the forums. Sorry you're first two posts were met without a response.
I don't have experience using Goodlink.
What I'd like to do is sync my personal contacts either with Entourage or Apple's Address Book (Yes, Mac user here!)
That's easily accomplished with iSync and either Palm's HotSync or Missing Sync.
have the Goodlink contacts sync with the server however it does it. Am I going to be disappointed and find out that this can't be done?
You might want to check with Goodlink. I checked their FAQ's, but nothing jumped out at me.

Hi Chris,
I checked out their FAQ earlier as well, and couldn't really find the answers I was looking for. Anyways, thanks for the response. I'm sure I'll have more questions to post once I finally get my Treo. Counting the days....

Can anyone answer this question?
I will probably be getting a Treo through my work and like the original poster, I am going to have to use the goodlink software to sync my calendar, tasks, contacts, and notes on my Windows machine at work. At home, however, I use a Mac and would like to then sync the Treo with my own data in iCal and Addressbook. Will the fact that Goodlink appears to replace the palms PIM apps prevent this?
Thanks.

The good news: Goodlink works great.
The bad news: It takes over the calendar and address book functions of the Treo.
The so-so news: You can still sync data to the default Palm address book and calendar, but it's a bit of a pain to access. Not nearly as easy to get to as the Goodlink address book and calendar. You have to navigate to it through menus instead of the simple push of a button (which takes you to the Goodlink apps)

Wow, fast reply . . . Thanks.
So, what you are saying with the so-so news is that it is possible, but I have to navigate through the Treos menus to get to the normal palm hotsync functions.
Is that just a matter of starting the palm's regular hotsync function or is it more complicated than that? If it is not more complicated, is it correct to assume the cradles sync button (does the cradle even have one?) would not work?
Finally, how did you figure it out? Are there instructions on how to do it? I couldn't find any on goodlinks websites?
Thanks for the help!

I just happened to be online...lucky timing I guess ;)
Yes. It's possible, but as you mentioned, you need to navigate through the Palm menus.
- Push the HOME button as many times as you need to get to the Applications menu that shows the Palm Contacts app.
- Then, select it, and you're in the address book.
The calendar is a little easier. You can access it from the regular Phone menu.
For hotsyncing, I bought Missing Sync, and I've been syncing with my Entourage calendar and select items from my Entourage address book.
I just used a lot of trial and error to figure it all out. The Goodlink site is useless for this kind of information.

Oh, that's actually not too bad.
The problem is that it sounds like there are two separate contact databases - one on the work computer that syncs through Goodlink to their software, and another from that Mac that syncs through the palm apps to the palm Addressbook.
Is that right? I would much rather the three devices (Mac at home, PC at work, Treo) all synced that same information into a single database.
That is how I am doing it now with a Tungsten T2, and it is really helpful. Unfortunately, when the Treos come online at work, the IT guys will be removing the palm software from the PCs so Goodlink will be the only way to sync them. If it maintains its own database, I will likely be out of luck.
